Unless you're going to start clubbing folks in the head with that buttstock, you have no worries about the grain therein.

As you said "LMF is very versatile", and their directions reflect that. I believe there are as someone else stated "more than one way to skin a cat" I'm sure my method wasn't exactly by the written directions, but very close. I do know it very easily accomplished what I was after. I myself...

I believe heavier coats of product has more of a factor than time on coarseness of finish. Wiscoaster is also perhaps carding(scaling) to much. He says he is using steelwool. I used burlap and had wonderful success. Also have heard builders using denim.

Nothing like making a simple 4 hour process into an agonizing procedure... Sorry, for your struggles(self-induced) but a little more thorough study of the assembly videos or a call to Jim, would have certainly helped you. At least you seem to be enjoying the process. To each his own, I suppose.

Stock is drilled not tenons. See Jim's post above.

Barrel needs to have final fit before tenons get drilled. You may need to move barrel in channel for a perfect fit, if they are predrilled in tenon, your predrilled holes in stock may not line up with predrilled holes in tenons, therefore tenons are not predrilled from kibler, at least on SMR.
