    October Postal Match

The weather gods finally cooperated and gave us a spectacular autumn day with no wind. I was fortunate in being able to take advantage of it, but I used a smooth rifle (smoothbore with sights, adjustable in this case) instead of a ML rifle. The gun is a T/C .56cal. Renegade SB (cap lock)...

Part for T/C Hawken .45 cal

Several years ago on a woods walk, friend of mine lost that very part. No more shooting for him until we screwed a T/C cleaning jag into the hole: It was 8-32.

    September Online Postal Match

As much as I enjoy sharing first place with Freedom475, I must withdraw my entry because I didn't shoot in compliance with the contest rules. Here's what I wrote on September 2: Target #2 speaks for itself, but I won't claim it or #3 for record as I shot kneeling, with my right forearm on the...

    September Online Postal Match

Thanks for running these matches, Gary and congratulations to all who participated! Those 'shrooms weren't such an easy target, but enjoyable to "pick" nonetheless.

    Good day casting yesterday!

I've been ladle casting RB's, conicals, and CF pistol and rifle bullets for ~50 years with few difficulties. However, yesterday (Oct. 3), I cast a bunch of .550" RB's from a Lyman mould* and got the smallest weight variation ever from that mould. I paid particular attention to the temperature...

Rifle Primer Conversion Units to Replace Peercussion Caps

I once had such a device (1/4 x 28 "nipple") that used a small rifle or small pistol primer, which had the "firing pin" in the screw off cap. I.e., it was a sealed system, but useless if you lost that cap. While it worked well enough (100% reliable), getting the fired primer out and replacing...

    October Postal Match

I didn't intend to sow confusion over the October target, but mine printed unusually small (73%). To avoid that problem, print yours at 100%. Btw, I'm toying with using a smoothbore just to see whether I can hit the eyes/nose or maybe even a tooth or two. And thanks, Gary for providing the...

Gary. Do the large pumpkins measure 3" x 2/14" (top of stem) or do I need to readjust my printer?

    Lyman Great Plains Rifle Issues

One problem with the GPR's double set triggers is the adjustment screw/bolt on the trigger plate is too short to do much [good]. It's an odd thread, but longer ones are available from such places as Dixon's in PA and I'm sure others.

    .54 Renegade Arrived

Urban Coyote, Do yourself a favor and remove the lock, polish its innards*, and make sure the screws on the bridle are tight (Don't ask....!). Polish the trigger levers and sear where it bears on those levers as well. The hardest thing about this was carefully removing and reinserting the coil...

    Re-visiting weighing RB

    1) How did you do it and what tolerances/variables do you use? and 2) How did you measure the difference in results (consistency in groups or accuracy)? ...kopelli I use my electronic powder scale to weigh RB's as it's much faster than my conventional scale (RCBS 5-0-5). Why do this at...

Is it uncool to use Pyrodex?

Pyrodex was all we could get locally at one time. It worked well enough in my percussion rifles and pistols, but I prefer real BP when I can get it. Btw, Pyrodex's salts are harder to remove than those left by BP, which at least for me, resulted in some bore rust (not fatal though). And yes...

.452 RNL bullet in 1858 Remington?

I've tried using the Lee Precision version of that design in my '58 Remington after sizing them to .452". They were difficult to start straight into the chamber mouths and were all over my target @ 25 yd. I then got the bright idea of loading them backwards (easier to start that way) and got...

    The did you ever thread......

When I was new to this sport I managed to shoot my ramrod into who knows where. Also, a few years ago, I had all my stuff together (I use a checklist) for a woods walk the next day, but grabbed patches that were too thick for the .492" RB I was using. I hammered a few RB's + too thick patch...
