September 2 Is World Coconut Day!

Just back from the range after shooting the cocoanuts with a borrowed rifle> I did OK, but lots of glare today. Anyway, here are the particulars, as they are cut off in the photo: Gun: Traditions Crockett Ball Dia.: .310" Patch Thickness: .014" Patch Lube: 1 Ballistol : 6 water Powder: Goex...

Fadala Article on T-C .56 Cal Smoothbore?

I have a T/C .56cal. SB and have tried it with both .535" (Lee) and .550" (Lyman) RB's. While some on this site have claimed "rifle like accuracy" from it, I haven't quite experienced it. Yes, Fadala was right about an overpowder wad, but I think his powder charges were too high. 85gr. FFg...

August 19 is National Potato Day!

Thank you for doing this Gary! Btw, I'm surprised I did as well as I did since I hadn't fired my Isaac Haines in quite awhile. However, my other targets weren't nearly as good. Karma's a bad word!

Some days you're the pigeon, other days the statue.

It may help you to use those 1" red-orange Target Dots in the center of your targets. They really improve the sight picture.

    REAL or maxi ball

I've used both in a T/C Hawken I once owned: Both were equally accurate. The T/C Maxi-Ball is also accurate in an unmentionable rifle I own with a 1:28" twist. In short, if either casts large enough to be engraved by the rifling and your twist rate is 1:48" or faster, you'll likely have an...

    Handgun reloader meets leadball

Having had to use a plastic mallet, longer short starter, and steel ramrod to load my rifle yesterday, I wasn't happy or looking forward to completing the postal match. The ball - patch combination was much too tight (but accurate!). For bench rest and demanding shooting, the tight ball - patch...

Anyone else's gun like a very tight load ?

I have a .54cal. Isaac Haines (Chambers kit) with a R. Rice bbl. that seems to like a tighter ball - patch combination. However, I don't! I needed a plastic mallet + an longer short starter to get a .532" (as cast, RCBS .530" RB mould, pure lead) + .017" cotton duck (?) patch started and a...

August 19 is National Potato Day!

I shot my potatoes a little while ago and am submitting 1 target as the other two were not nearly as good. I chose my Waksupi-built .54cal. Isaac Haines (Chambers kit), using a home cast .530" (.532" in fact) RB + .017" cotton duck (?) patch. Lube was 1 Ballistol : 6 H2O. My powder charge...

Copper anti seize for my nipple and set screw plug.

White lithium grease has always worked for me. The trick is to loosen the nipples after you're finished shooting and prior to cleaning. Btw, it's not nearly as messy as anti seize. Lastly, white lithium or assembly grease (e.g. Park's) works much better than anti seize when I install (or...

Does wasp nest catch fire when shot?

Sam Fadala promoted hornet/wasp nests for those experiencing blown, i.e., burned out, patches. You took a piece of the nest and put it over the powder charge, prior to loading your patched RB. Since it prevents patch burnout, I think it doesn't burn or smolder.

A fowler for round ball accuracy

Some thoughts about smoothbores and roundball accuracy. If you test at 25 yd., you can see your results and immediately discern your aiming/shooting errors. Beyond that it could be you OR it could the gun, load, etc.. Second, if you use a patched RB, you don't need a combination that's so...

A fowler for round ball accuracy

I have a Green River Forge 20ga. NW Trade Gun that I shoot with patched RB's (not shot unless a postal match requires it) and can get excellent results from it @ 25 yd. 50 yd.? Maybe, but that requires a lot more powder and fiddling. I don't think it will hold 6" beyond 50 yd. though. I've...

    An odd Deerstalker

In the early 1990's, Investarms made 20ga. shotguns, with screw-in chokes no less, for Navy Arms. Perhaps one of the bbls. found its way to Lyman as a .50cal. smooth rifle? Obviously this would be prior to reaming it to 20ga.

Thank you Gary for your efforts on our behalf. If July's theme was "frying eggs on the sidewalk," August is promising to be hot enough to fry those potatoes.

    Cutting patches

The OP's method works, but a better way would be to use a rotary cutter + backer to cut strips of say, pillow ticking (just follow the lines), which you can then lube and cut at the muzzle or cut into "squares," lube and use as is. As for how wide the patch should be, I use caliber x 2.3...
