    Making patches

I've always used ball diameter x 2.3 for my patches.

    No Sights?

Many pistols, both CF and BP lack a rear sight. You regulate them by finding an appropriate RB diameter, .457" in the ROA, adjusting the powder charge (and maybe the granulation), and your aim. Btw, it is possible you may have to file the front sight, but making it taller seems more likely...

    Pocket drill cloth at Joann's

Just got back from my local JoAnn's, which isn't closing. Although I couldn't find pocket drill, I found many other suitable 100% cotton fabrics: lots of denim, muslin, Osnaburg (too thin and too loose a weave), and even two thicknesses of pillow ticking. Additionally, they are expecting more...

April Postal Match Target Celebrates National Kite Month!

Today was pleasant enough to do some shooting, although it's now breezy enough to fly a kite. The best I could do today was only 28 pts, because an errant shot (0 pts.) knocked me out of a potential 30 pts. or maybe even higher. Aside from some minor sighting issues (now resolved), I had a...

April Postal Match Target Celebrates National Kite Month!

I'm back from "God's waiting room," I mean Florida; have printed my targets, and will try to fly my kite, or at least shoot at it tomorrow.

    Joann's - what am I doing wrong ?

All, when you shop for potential patching material, try these suggestions: look for 100% cotton cloth; take a caliper or micrometer with you to measure its thickness (compressed); don't overlook denim, which also comes in various weights/thicknesses.

    Maybe better patch lube option?

Or you can mix and try Stumpy's Moose Snot (google it) if you prefer a grease lube.

    Smooth bore recoil?

Doesn't stock design, drop in particular, affect how much recoil you feel (other things being equal of course)?

    Ultra thin patches?

If casting your own, you can try beagling (google it) the mould. You won't need any patch if your bullet is larger. If you don't cast, you can try teflon tape (experiment with various thicknesses) in the manner of paper patching (2 wraps).

    Scottish Steel Pistols

After reading about kilts, plaids. tartans, and lately a book review in Muzzleloader magazine, I learned that those all metal pistols were called dags. The book in question was [the late] John Prebble's, Culloden, which describes such pistols, the clan system, and who, and why the Scottish...

March Postal Match Target Ready to Shoot

All, I went back to the indoor range here in FL today to see if the luck o' the Irish would help me. In short, it did, but with a .22cal. target pistol (Ruger Govt. Model). The score was 80 (after 5 other targets, which weren't that good). Here's a photo of it, even though it's not for record.

    February Postal Match Target

No BP range close by me here in FL, which is why I didn't bring a ML with me. However, I did bring a .22cal. target pistol and went to an indoor range yesterday to fire at that Feb. target, but not for record. My results weren't too bad considering I hadn't fired that pistol in quite a while...

    February Postal Match Target

All, greetings from not so sunny Florida where my wife & I winter over. I've had computer troubles, but now have resolved them. Be that as it may, although I printed out the February target, I won't be able to shoot them with a BP firearm. Ergo, I'll try with a .22cal. target pistol and...

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Late to this thread, but I once tried an elongated bullet in my Euroaroms 1858 Rem. NMA. (The operative word is once.) The particulars were: A Lee Precision .452" Keith design, which I cast and sized to .451" to fit the bbl. of my pistol. The powder charge was 25gr. FFFg, with no felt over...
