September 2023 Postal Match Target - Let's Go Bowling!

I would have had trouble seeing them too had I been able to shoot the September target. A bit of late advice: For those difficult to see targets, try using the appropriate size orange Target Dots/Spots as they make life so much easier.

Did I overpay for this Colt Signature Series?

    Rethinking clean-up of my GPR

mh52, I started doing the above in part because of accuracy concerns (stock, wedge, hook breech interaction) and convenience, or perhaps laziness. Everything is clean and rust free with no accuracy issues, but the weather hasn't been conducive to any kind of shooting lately.

    Rethinking clean-up of my GPR

Never, SDS. I think I need to edit my original post to say that the Protruding "horn" at the rear of the bbl. gets wrapped in teflon tape.

    Rethinking clean-up of my GPR

Like many of you, I removed the GPR bbl. from the stock and the lock from its mortice to clean them after a day's shooting. While neither was much of a chore, it dawned on me that removing and reseating the bbl. and wedges might "loosen things up" so to speak and degrade accuracy a bit. I now...

Shooting PAPER targets again?? Oh my........

All, If you're going to take multiple shots in a short period of time, a wet lube will help keep the BP fouling in check. 1 part Ballistol : 6 parts water works for me, but there are lots of other options, including spit.

    August Postal Match

All, I guess I will miss the August PM. Here's why: I shot my targets for record with an unmentionable rifle. I.e., I needed to sight the thing in an came to find I completely fouled up the Williams receiver sight adjustments (reading the directions afterwards certainly helped! LOL). I also...

    Patch over powder technique question

All, Sam Fadala advocated the use of an over powder patch for guns whose bores burned or shredded patches. He also mentioned hornet nests for the same reason. I think with little attention to patch material and thickness + powder charge, and bore polishing, you wouldn't need the extra patch or...

    Powder (Charge) Dropper

Definitely consider a Lee "Perfect" or deluxe version of it. Also, a used Lyman #55 can also be found for a very attractive price.

Did I make a mistake? or Is there a misconception about smoking molds?

I tried the Kroil treatment on one mould, a Lyman 2 cavity [#245496 for my .243Win.] because it was a bit reluctant to drop its contents: Didn't work for me. However, there is one other "solution" if you'd care to try it. To wit, spray the mould cavities with alcohol based dry graphite film...

Did I make a mistake? or Is there a misconception about smoking molds?

It also depends on the quality of the aluminum the mould is made of. I.e., Lee moulds always get smoked, but LBT, NOE, Arsenal not so much. Moreover, what you use to smoke the mould is important too. To wit, wooden matches or butane lighters work best, candles deposit greasy carbon, which you...

Williams Peep Sight for T/C Hawken

Yes, it is a great sight, but it is made of aluminum. Be careful of tightening the elevation, windage, and locking screws as they can and do strip out. (Don't ask....!) In fact, I just had to re-tap mine a 2nd time (to 6-32) because of that problem. Trust me, I was hardly ham handed either.

    Its showing promise.............

Both Lyman and Williams make tang mounted receiver sights for the GPR, but they may require drilling and tapping a new hole in the tang. Also, if you can get the adjustable buckhorn sight "dialed in," think about using Crazy Glue on its innards to prevent its "wandering zero." (Don't ask....)...

    Smooth bore-patches?

The answer to this is to experiment, changing one variable at a time until you get the accuracy you want (and that doesn't always mean using a patched RB). E.g., in my GRF 20ga. NW Trade Gun, a patched RB is the most accurate even with as little as 65gr. FFg. Tow wads fore & aft also work...

    The Unconquered

Sight correction, TDM: It was set on th eve of Pontiac's War, 1763. I watched it today and really liked it, but it helped tp know the historical context and the personnel (e,g., Eucayer, Bouquet, Wm. Johnson) involved + the Indian tribes as well.
