    Dont judge me...

I've always been fascinated by short barreled rifles. A while back started thus one from miscellaneous parts that were laying around. Even though it is not finished I wanted to see how it shot and found no problems keeping all shots into a paper plate at 50 yards which is well within the ranges...

    Rifles of the Fur Trade

During the 70's while sitting around the camp fire a frequent topic of discussion, sometimes heated, involved what particular rifles were really the Mountain Man's favorite. During this time just about everyone was convinced that the Hawken rained supreme but when discussing the earlier years...

    Cock alignment

Every Siler left hand lock I've ever gotten is that way. The lock plate has the pan attached and the issue could have been corrected on the molds but guess no one cared enough to fix it. That said, even though only half of the flint hits the frizzen they have all sparked well and owners never...

    Percussion locks

On a flinter, get the best money can buy, a lot of things have to be just right for maximum performance. Percussions are much simpler, all they have to do is drop the hammer hard enough to ignite a cap. Even the poorer ones can be smoothed out.

    What's it for?

TC offered a scope mount that used the two rear sight holes to mount the front of the mount and the third on the breech to anchor the rear of the mount. With this mount no additional holes needed to be drilled and tapped.

Question about TC Round Ball Twist Barrels

The factory round ball barrels have deep cut rifling. There is so much confusion over rate of twist. 1-48 vs 1-56 or 1-66. The amount of powder burned and velocity have more effect on accuracy than many other factors. A 1-48 shoots very well with light target loads but will get erratic with...

    Offhand shooting?

Might try moving your lead foot to the left a bit. Often if you are shooting to the right your natural body stance is centered to far right. It is normal for the muscles to relax once trigger is pulled which will push the muzzle a bit. It usually isn't much but just a fraction of an inch at the...

    Rough barn gun

I always clean up the castings before I start to fit them to the wood but it doesn't look like the fit was bad, will just need some work. Cleaning up castings is one of the tasks I hate to do but just part of the job. Take your time and pay attention to the details and you'll have a fine gun.

Best way to pay with out paypal

Use PayPal at your own risk! I buy and sell muzzleloaders only but they froze my account with no warning and no chance to plead my case. The funds in the account were confiscated and eventually "lost" to service fees. There was not even a suspension time, my activities were permanently suspended.

    JB Weld temporary sight attachment

Acraglas is my go to for joining a hooked breech for inletting. It is amazingly strong on clean parts. You do have to heat parts to get them apart and this NEEDS to be done outdoors as fumes are terrible. Residue will clean easily with a wire brush.

    Rust bluing options ?

I've found that the Laurel Mtn. browning solution produces a blacker finish when boiled (actually I like it.) For a bluer finish go with Mark Lee's solution. For a dull matte finish you can bead blast and then finish. Neither product is a covering finish so if you want bright shiny finish the...

    Gun Broker ?

Over the past 10 years I've sold a LOT of ML rifles and pistols on GB and take pride in my feedback rating. It makes me happy when a buyer responds that the item was better than described. Not all sellers are as picky about listings defects so as in all things bought unseen, be cautious. Ask for...

Just thought of a couple I haven't seen for a while : "Man in the Wilderness" and "A Man Called Horse" both starring Richard Harris.

Almost better than the original, maybe a close second.

    The Best Muzzleloading Movies

Many good movies listed so far but you might enjoy "April Morning" with Tommy Lee Jones. Like "Patriot" the main character does not want to get involved with the revolution but gets pulled into it. As almost always TLJ is superb.

Having GPR .50 cal reworked by Bobby Hoyt!

Besides the diameter of the breech plug another consideration on TC's, Lyman's and others with barrel ribs screwed on is the depth of the screw holes. On a 15/16" barrel there is often very little wall thickness at these points.

    Dixie gun works southern rifle

They are pretty heavy but my biggest complaint was the quality of the locks and triggers. Since factory parts are no longer available repairs can be tough. Good news is a number of current locks and triggers can be modified to fit and all are better than the originals.

    Custom Flintlocks

Most old time gunmakers were very frugal and if a barrel, lock, triggers, whatever were still functioning they had no problems repurposing them. I've worked on many "originals" that were obviously built from a mismatch of parts. I just recently took the stock and it's hardware, triggers and...

How Long Do You Expect A Frizzen To Last ?

If the steel I'm putting on is more than 1/16" or so yes, I remove about the same thickness from the frizzen face. Almost any high carbon steel will work. Old files are great but you need to do a lot of shaping and thinning. Years ago I picked up a few feet of industrial saw blade that does a...
