    Checkering, Rigby Kit

Anyone interested in checkering, here is a Rigby Kit from Pectonica that I just got the nerve to checker. Done in 45 degree diamonds for the forearm and 60 degree diamonds for the wrist. Pattern fill-in / semi-point pattern. Chose those diamond sizes and the patterns after looking at how the...

    Gun barrel greying

Lots of answers on this one. I have used Brass Black on steel and gotten a nice gray finish. Paint it one, let it go black and then wipe off with 0000 steel wool and soap. Repeat for an even finish. Coat with a good oil. Give a nice light gray that does not rust easily. Mike F.

    Left hand sporting breechplug?

Hi: I have build a right hand model of that rifle. I would say you will have to have one (a breech plug) made. Do not try the drum route. Pressures are too high in an English rifling system. You would blow the drum off. Buy a right hand and take it to a machine shop and (yup) bite the...

    York Build

I want to build a Chambers > York kit. ToTW has two books that show York rifles, "Gunsmiths of York County" and Rifles of Colonial America, Vol II. Which one is the best for a York build? Anyone read both? Looking for detailed pictures on carvings and engravings. Mike F

    kit build finish?

Mike56: Not to break from the crowd, but I have used Lee Express Blue and it produces a super hard blue/black rust finish. Was really happy with the results. Used a pvc pipe for the scalding tank. Mike F

    Lock Dissasembly

sean30ber: Paul, as is usual, has given a great description of the process. Only thing to add is when he says clamp the mainspring: do buy yourself a mainspring clamp (say from Track of the Wolf, or anywhere else). Handy thing to have, if for nothing else than gun maintenance. Pliers or...

    First Checkering Panel

Zonie: This is headed toward my 1870 English Target Rifle, which had full checkering (pointed as opposed to the earlier English Flat). I just decided that discretion was the better part of valor and practice would be appropriate. Which is why the modern starter stock. The spacing pitch is 18...

    First Checkering Panel

Learning (teaching myself) checkering. Got the book and some films > and now learning the tools. Checkering Photos This is my first panel. A fill in pattern for beginners. Lots of mistakes, but good enough to be encouraging. Biggest problem is spacing on the flat to curve surfaces - I...

    my .450 rigby

Marmotslayer: I believe that Pecatonica provides Track with stocks. I looked at the Track kit too. But I just had to have the fast twist barrel with those monster bullets. No fear on Pecatonica - or at least they were great with my order. Not a single problem. Mike

Marmotslayer Ooops, just looked at the Pecatonica site. Under "Services" they install a breach plug for $20. Worth every penny in my book. Mike F

    my .450 rigby

marmotslayer: Patent Breach: The kit came with the breach mounted (or I paid 25$ for that, I forget). In anycase, they did it. I looked for the barrel seperate and could not find it. I guess they buy a general GM octogon cartridge barrel (1", 1-18 twist) cut it to length and mount an english...

    my .450 rigby

marmotslayer: As I understand it, the fast twist (1-18) barrel is a GM cartridge barrel that has had an English Breach mounted to it. On mine - I pulled the breach to polish the powder cup smooth and make a breach plug scraper that was sized to the cup in the breach. From what I saw...

    my .450 rigby

Marmotslayer: Try this: http://www.longrifles-pr.com/english.shtml Built one. The hooked breach tang is not easy, like a Hawken - but the tang is double bolted, once from the top to the trigger boss, then under from the trigger plate up to the bottom of the tang. Have to mount the drip...

    my .450 rigby

Paul: Great to see that done!!! Was that the Pectonica kit? Looks like it (looks line mine, except for the checkering and the nose cap - I did my cap in pewter and have yet to tackle the checkering). I am deeply into practicing my checkering > so I can do up my Rigby. I like how yours goes...

    Cleaning a Percussion Rifle

Effigy: I have a Hawken and an English Target Rifle. Both have hooked breech systems where the barrel comes out from the stock. Recommented cleaning: Dismount the barrel. Take out the nipple, put the nipple end of the barrel into a bucket, put a funnel into the up end of the barrel, get a...
