2 Questions - Does cleaning patch size matter? - When do you need to re-blue your barrel?

I use a slightly undersized jag and patches cut from old athletic socks. The material is thick, squeezes in tight so it scrubs into the grooves and is very absorbent.

Joseph Golcher Lock - Replacement nipple needed

You won't find anything like that looking for Joseph Golcher. Golcher made locks, hardware stores carried the locks to sell to rifle builders, so he had nothing to do with the drum/nipple/barrel arrangement. The only way I'd consider firing that rifle is by correctly threading the barrel for a...

WITHDRAWN SIDE PLATE FOR MARKWELL .45

Keep checking ebay, people part out old muzzleloaders all the time. Don't restrict your search to Markwell arms though, they were the importer and other brands may be the same.

    Nepalese P53 rifled musket.

Without question, none of the Nepalese rifle muskets were used in the American Civil War.

    Not bad. Within reason anyway.

Yep, that’s the plan. Did it on my Griswold and Gunnison repro.

    Spiller & Burr

I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with this thing. I shot it a bunch today, honestly lost count but around 7 cylinders full, 6 at a minimum. No cap jams, and no cylinder binding at all. That's a first for me with an out of the box revolver. My Colt repros cap jam and my Remington repro...

Mine rotates very easily, the washer touches the frame, but just barely.

    Spiller & Burr

Sounds a lot like mine. I did shoot one cylinder over the weekend. As expected, with the front sight almost buried it still hit about 10 inches high at 20 yards.

    Spiller & Burr

Well, I couldn't resist and ordered one from Dixie. Really happy with the service, ordered Wednesday morning and I got it today. I don't know when I can get a chance to shoot it, but overall it seems really nice. Typical not so great Pietta grip fitting, but other than that I can see no...

The problem with minie balls it that they must be sized exactly to your bore. You can try them but I would say you'd have better success with working up a good round ball load or maxi ball.

You don't use any patches at all with minies, that just won't work!

Looks like they are already gone at Taylor's, gotta act fast I guess!

Are the slow twists of the Springfield and Enfield rifle musket not suitable for minié balls?

When it's that bad either the minies are too small or are not made of pure lead. Did you measure your bore size? Did you size the minies to the right diameter for your bore? The very first thing you need to do is accurately measure your bore, then you need minies that are no more than .002...

    1858 Remington Brass real ?

The Spiller and Burr was actually pretty much a copy of the Whitney revolver. The only real resemblance to a Remington is that they both are closed top frame designs with octagonal barrel. The Whitney used an odd cylinder base pin set-up to avoid treading on Remington patents and the Spiller...

    Advice for beginner

What you have described will work, it may not get you the best accuracy but will work. Get comfortable with the gun then work on the details. You will need to measure the bore and use a pure lead minie no more than .002 under bore size, experiment with different lubes, beeswax based with...

    Mass produced flintlocks

The only reliability issues I have had with the Investarm made Lymans was with the touchole. Opening up just a little made all the difference.

"New" Investarms Hawken Carbine & I already Messed it up

The bolster on the barrel is contacting the lock plate. take barrel and tang back out and put back in without the tang screw, just wiggle it until it goes into place. Nothing is messed up just out of place a little. There is nothing wrong with taking the tang out, you just half to get it back...

    Just arrived: 1861 Springfield

The only thing I see that is amiss, is that it has been pretty heavily sanded and the metal looks to have been cleaned up.
