    Hand built vs production

It really depends on the quality of the parts and how well it was built. A well built rifle with a Siler, or Kibler lock, a Rice, Colerain, Long Hammock, barrel that is properly assembled and tuned will be far superior to an off the shelf rifle. One built with an old CVA lock by Bubba with...

Seeking Advice: Stick with Current Rifle or Opt for a Replacement?

I would say, you have a rifle that has been thoroughly checked by a gunsmith and declared good to go. If you get another, there is always a chance for some kind of quality issues with the new one as well, it can happen. I would keep the pressure on to get a replacement ramrod and keep it.

    sprue up or down

I'm saying it probably doesn't matter which way the sprue goes. Think about it, if a ring of lead is cut off the circumference of the ball when it is loaded, and there is a protrusion sticking out beyond the ball, if the ball is loaded with the protrusion to the side it is going to get sheared...

    sprue up or down

Since we're talking about a revolver, if you put the ball sideways wouldn't it shear off with the lead ring?

Military Heritage India-made Fusil de Chasse

I know Leonard Day has passed away, I wonder if anyone is carrying on the business. I have a Leonard Day Dutch trade gun and really like it.

Military Heritage India-made Fusil de Chasse

Do the proof houses publish the results of all their tests? Not disputing, just wondering where to find this information, would be interesting.

    Which Revolver?

Get the one you like, I don't think it matters if it's your first or not. They all have their little idiosyncrasies, but nothing hard. Just get what you like and go at it!

    Replica Military Muzzle Loaders

I started watching that video but had to stop, but I plan to go back and finish it. I am confused by one point, what do you mean about a distinction between a replica and a reproduction? According to the dictionary reproduction is a synonym for replica. OK, update, I went back and watched the...

    flintlock ID

I'll second the "does it spark?" What's going on with the mainspring right at the bend? Looks like a little chip or something.

Fusil de chasse a cheek slapper?

I quit using the one that I had because it whacked me pretty good. I have a club butt Dutch gun and a Carolina gun that are much more comfortable to shoot.

    Fired my first flintlock shot

You're on your way. I'd get rid of that paper and find some leather as soon as possible. The paper could catch fire from the flash.

    .589 Minies?

I had one with a .584 bore, I am sure there are some larger.

Not bad for 45 years old

I've got two of those and they are both great shooters.

    Flintlocks at Local Shop

My own experience, even new the CVA locks I had weren't good. Not that they didn't work at all, but had a very high failure to fire rate. I'd take a chance on the TC's or Pedersoli's.

    Flintlocks at Local Shop

I currently have a CVA flintlock Mountain rifle, and a CVA flintlock frontier rifle, same lock as the Mountain rifle. My brother had a big bore flintlock Mountain rifle. All three had very poor locks. Weak mainsprings, a lot of failure to fire. The flint hammer is very small, and requires a...

    Flintlocks at Local Shop

Forget the CVAs, those CVA locks were pretty poor. I have had personal experience with several of them and none of them were reliable. Springs are weak, very small pan, just poor geometry. The Renegades are more of a modern design, with flat butt plates, if that doesn't bother you, I'd go with...

    Tick cloth

Would you be talking about pillow ticking? If so, it is a cotton material you can get at fabric stores, it is generally used to make pillows with. Make sure it is 100% cotton though, I've seen some that was partly polyester.

    Dye muzzleloader medal

New traps never dyed well either had to get a little rusty first. I don't really see it being a good idea.

Traditions Kentucky barrel pins too short

Yep, it's a kit, not a fully formed rifle. Lots of wood to be removed!

    That Evil Ember

I 've seen a video of it happening, just a blank powder charge and no injury, but it can happen.
