    Replacemnt Lock for Investarms/Lyman Flintlock

Use it as is, I have never had any issues with my Investarm flintlock.

    Clay Smith Trade Gun Build

I would take up Comfortably numb on the engraving offer rather than getting another one. The shape and style of the plate changed over time and you want to keep it to the right era.

    New to me Rifle

Just a regular Zouave rifle with a Bill Large barrel. He at one time made drop in barrels for the Civil War repros. Sights were most likely added by the owner.

    Rifle kit suggestions???

No personal experience with them but there is The Hawken Shop.

    1863 Springfield

I would say the main reason is that there just aren't as many out there. What Civil War reenactors want heavily influences the manufacturers, and most reenactors want the 1861 because it is more correct for use throughout the war, including the early years. In addition to looks, the 1863 has a...

Chiappa/Armi Sport or Veteran Arms 1842 Springfield?

The Traditions is also made by Chiappa/Armisport, just marketed by Traditions. Veteran Arms are made in India. You will find tons of banter on here about the quality of the Indian made guns pro and con. The general consensus is they aren't bad but often need some work and should be treated...

    1861 bridesburgh accuracy stinks

A few things for shooting minies. The condition of the bore in the last few inches at the muzzle is critical, this is often worn from ramrod use. You need to measure your exact bore size, use minies that are no more than .002 under bore size, and make sure they are pure lead. If the barrel is...

Dixie Gun Works Japan rifle barrel's

Their Japanese made Tennessee Mountain rifles were very good shooters.

    Flintlock

That is an Investarm Hawken. Other than the wonky rear sight, they are a nice little rifle.

    Finding a 1853 Enfield

Put a want to buy ad in the classifieds here, check gunbroker and sites like that, Lodgewood manufacturing is another place to look. The NSSA forum is good too, but you need to be a member now to post.

    M1863 Remington Contract Rifle

Drop in bore light is the best way. You can also run a tight cleaning patch down the bore and feel for any rough spots, but I'd prefer to see it as well.

    CVA Kentucky.45

If you're going to refinish, I'd take the time to do some wood removal and stock shaping, thin down and shape the forend at least. Those things can be great shooters!

    Proof Hawken made a flint

Yep, just addressing the fact that it is well known and not disputed that there were earlier flintlock guns made by the Hawken family.

    Proof Hawken made a flint

It is a very well-known fact that members of the Hawken family made flint rifles and I don't think it was ever disputed. The only questions I have ever seen are, were the fully developed plains style rifles made by the Hawkens ever made in flint, or in full stock.

CVA Mtn Rifle Conversion Flint to Percussion

What is the issue with it in flintlock form? If it just isn't reliable, you could get one of the L&R replacement flint locks. Those early CVA flintlocks aren't very good.

Newbie from the North, looking for advices

Welcome to the forum, love the opossum! You’ll be able to get all the info you need here, I’ll just add one thing, paper cartridges are for muskets, you’ll want to use patched round balls.

    1861 US Springfield ?

The very first thing to address are the threads for the nipple. These have to be in good shape, if not they need to be properly repaired before even thinking of shooting it. Next is the bore, if it is very rough and pitted, you may want to reconsider shooting it and relegate it to a wall hanger.

    M1863 Remington Contract Rifle

They are a pretty good rifle, but no longer in production if any parts are needed. I'd give it a good going over to make sure everything is good. You don't mention price, but I'd say no more than $300 would be a decent deal. They were designed to shoot minie balls, which you have to do some...

    Leman Smooth Rifle

Those look like vise marks on the barrel, either from when it was made or when someone removed the breechplug at some point.
