National Escargot Day is May 24 - Let's Shoot Some Snails

Man... left over pizza is way too good for squirrels. Only thing I feed 'em is lead. :)

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Tried my hand at casting RB for the first time since I was 12 or 13 years old, Grandad taught us young-un's how back in the day. Guess I remembered enough to get satisfactory results. .520 Bag mold from Larry Callahan that I straightened out the handles on and tapped on some small wood file...

March Postal Match Target Ready to Shoot

Got a chance to shoot this one yesterday. Was helping a buddy out with some maintenance at his ranch, wind was crazy, gusting to 35 mph from about 10 o'clock, trying to get a steady rest atop a fence post was dicey at best but it is what it is. This was an experimental load with a homebrew lube...

Welcome and greetings from Hickory Creek TX.

    Globe front sights

Yes, but not on a muzzleloader. I have a vintage Weihrauch air rifle configured this way, it works okay but for sure is better with a rear peep.

    Black Powder Internal Ballistics Calculator

I have, with my Chrony, and others have too, Chorizo I believe. It is indeed accurate... with powders of comparable oomph to Swiss.

    Solved the percussion cap issue.

Some of you may already know this, but upon making some quick measurements I find that #11 caps are VERY close in dimension to small rifle/pistol primers, only needing to be slightly deeper or having a longer "skirt". I wonder if something like this could be used or maybe slightly modified to...

    Solved the percussion cap issue.

Clearly there is significant interest in a die that can produce a cap which closely resembles the factory made #11 and #10's. One that can be used in a reloading press would be my preference. Actually, kinda hard to believe such a thing is not already available.

Ever let one go That you Should have Kept? (p1853 Enfield)

Nice, looks like an Ithaca or Santa Fe Hawken of some variety.

    WANTED Original Hawkin.

Looking at the pics of the originals posted above and noticed something I have overlooked thus far, how low the front sight blade is and the corresponding low rear sight. It seems to me most replicas have notably taller sights. Then again, it seems every time I look at pics of originals I see...

How do you measure the bore in a rifle?

Seems like that would be mighty hard to load. A thinner patch might help but your ball is still larger than your bore, albeit only .004". My first thought is try a .520" ball, or even .515". I have a percussion rifle with a .532" bore that I shoot .520" balls out of. For hunting, .012" patch...

    December 2023 Postal Match

Had time to shoot these targets during some down time while helping a good friend out with some chores at his ranch this week. I have an extra hole in the rested target from my first squib shot that was intended to hit between the 2 targets, guess I should have stapled them a little further...

Here is a pic for comparison. Left to right. 1.Navy Arms shotgun. 2.Allen FA S.F. Hawken. 3.Ithaca Hawken from Numrich. 4.Generic TC Renegade.

    Odd percussion nipple

I also have a 12 gauge Navy Arms SxS percussion shotgun of mid 80's vintage, so for grins I took a close look at the nipples on it, which I believe to be original, and low and behold, they are the same as the one in my SF Hawken... well, closer than anything else Iv'e seen. Must be an Italian...
