    Amusing/Ridiculous Muzzleloading Misconceptions...

Have people get a really nice surprise when they see what these guns can due. I normally shoot fainter, but have a Parker Hale Wentworth that is accurate out farther than I can find a place around here to use it.

    DGW shipping

I've used the gun works for about 40 years, they really do try to have good service. Suzi knows her warehouse by heart, she can get a part while one of the work force is still finding the part in the computer. While Joe was alive, he always said what They sold was service. They really have a...

    This screw won't budge!

First First, DO NOT RUSH. Most of the penitrating oils work, but I've had really good luck using bio diesel. Let soak and tap screw lightly every few hours with also some pressure to try to turn the screw. I've had old guns that a customer with to much money wanted made shootable again just to...

    Lyman Great Plains Rifle

Good guns, just put a .58 caliber barrel and a after market lock(flint) on a friends gun. Lyman has good lines, like the way they come up.

    Making Bear Grease

The bear that zI rendered out, the bear fat(grease) came out like crico. It was or still is a creamy white color. Got three 3# coffee cans full and only one had a little free oil after about 3 years. And I do think that that is enough to last me for as long as I can still hunt.

    Flint maintenance

I have been knapping arrow heads and flints for a lot of years, but I also cut flints with a diamond rock saw and yes they work great. Check with a rock shop and maybe they can match you up with a rockhound that will sharpen your flints or cut you new ones for alot less than the cost for new ones.

Using an electric pot for casting balls

I have used electric pots for over 45 years, and I've had as good of results with Lee as any of the other brands. I've used bottom pours and used a ladle, and have came to to conclusion that I like using ladles the best. It's really up to you whether to use a ladle or not, but when I was...

    Flintlock Snobbery

I started with a cap lock, changed to flint and like both. But I think I'm more interested in flinters over all. But I've been more lucky in hunting with a flintlock, and maybe that is just the way the cards played out. Just enjoy what you want to use and have fun.

    Preferred Barrel Length

Personally have an own flinterst have than range 28 to 42 inch barrels, I may be nuts but each has it's merits. In the brush around here (western Oregon ) I've had really good luck using the short barrels for haunting black tail deer and other critters.

Red residue at muzzle after shooting

I asked about those red things over fourty years ago, and was told that was called barrel blood and was a good sign that the load was a good one. This is not a bad thing or anything to fret about, just something that is part of black powder shooting.

    I can’t see my sights

Try some lime green paint, rust- olleam(spelling?) I've had good luck with that on my front sights and I'm 70. Several other shooters that I know have tried this color and also had good results

Is a 40 round ball sufficient for deer hunting?

I've killed one nice buck with a .45 (.440ball) over 80 grain of 3F, 70 yards and a perfect shot placement. And I was not impressed with the knock down. But I had impressive results with only 5 caliber more, that is a .50. I hunt with a flinter and have made a jump to a .58 that was make by a...
