Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

Lots of lessons on erosion, smoothing of rocks in flowing water. I'm educated now. Point was supposed to be that your barrel is worn by repeated passage of projectiles through it. I'll have to be more careful about what and how I present my thoughts.

    Very nice job.

Got my tools, ready to disassemble, any words of warning?

Using a magnetic sign for the pieces would aid in keeping the parts in order. In a previous life we always laid parts out left to right when stripping a weapon. Strikes me that if you have similar but not exactly same size screws it would save searching for the right one at each step. Between...

where to find sabots and a musket nipple in Canada?

Check The Gun Works? They're in the U.S. as well but maybe better shipping? Rustywood doesn't seem to carry them. Call Hillfolk in Senlac, SK. Never dealt with them but they seem to have a good reputation. No website. Where you from? How big of a rush are you in? I'm down to less than one...

    Just getting started

Traditions has a decent reputation, I'm not aware of any ongoing or major issues with the brand. But I've not researched them to any great degree. Ask for input in the General Muzzleloading section. For a brand new rifle, strikes me as a decent price.

    Just getting started

Some folks have reported decent results with less than perfect bores. Who knows? If you can't get it for a price you're comfortable with, another bus will be along. If you can have a personal inspection, run a patched jag into the barrel. If it's smooth the whole way, that's a good start. A...

    Just getting started

Welcome. If it's not too late...run! Save yourself from the curse you are invoking upon yourself. Don't see much for ML shotguns myself but they are about. Personally not in the market which is likely why I don't notice them. Hawken copies is all I've owned, just fancy them. For a rifle...

Civil War Black Wilderness Trapper Stereoview

Boy, the places this forum can take you. There is a photo by M.H. Zahner (1856-1943) of one Annie Taylor and the barrel she went over Niagra Falls in on her 63rd birthday, Oct 21, 1901. Queen of The Mist is written on her barrel. First person to survive it. I can find no mention of a Lake...

Powder grain size effects on velocity

Smaller grain reaches it's peak pressure faster. When the projectile has moved the height of the powder column, the volume has doubled and harder to maintain the same pressure. So powder that is slower to peak pressure is safer, all other factors being the same. There's quite a few variables...

    For What It's Worth

People can set any value on anything but in the end it's only "worth" is what it sold for. Sellers choose the lowest they'll go in price and buyer decide how much they'll pay. If people don't want to start at the lowest acceptable bid set by a seller at an auction, guess the item isn't worth...

Does lead really wear out rifling by it's passage?

I can only observe that rocks are smoothed by the water in flowing water. However I really doubt the passage of lead through your barrel will have any noticeable effect in your lifetime. Regardless of how many times you fired in a day, nor for how many days. I might think patching could wear...

Minie Skirt stuck in barrel of 1861 Springfield

In a recent thread I described how I use a hollow curtain rod to extract a stuck brush. The the thought occurs to me, a variation on that would be to employ a curtain rod or tube that can get through the center of the skirt. Run your cleaning rod through it, put a bore brush on and draw it back...

I hope I have not ruined my muzzloader?Help!!

If you do run a bore brush, twist in the direction of the threads, generally clockwise in my experience, to "unlock" the bristles before pulling it out. If it seems you feel the brush loosening off, turn the other way. If you lose a bore brush in the barrel for any reason, a hollow tubular...

Scored a deal? I hope nobody pees on my parade.

I've not gotten out to shoot it yet. I let time get away on me and the local range is snowbound in the winter. I may just take it out to a clearing and make sure it goes bang a few times but that'd be about all until spring.

    vacu-sealing BP

It's that's how you want to store your powder, your business. If everyone on here subscribed to "the conventional wisdom", there'd only be one lube, one way to clean your gun, one diameter ball for each caliber,..... When I get going with my dehydrator and vac sealer, the missus often gives me...

What to use for a powder measure?

If you have no volumetric measure but access to a reloading scale; A few years back I measured different kinds of black powder and roughly it was one grain by weight gave one grain by volume. Not hard and fast, a small amount of variation. Given that most folks change charges by 5 grains or so...

Anybody know of an Investarms delaer in Canada?

I have been accused of being a champion of the obvious but, can local gun store order it for you? There are some outfits that will Import for you. A little while ago I stopped at customs on both sides of the line. Neither had a ready answer for me. CBP referred me to BATF, who I haven't...
