Drop in bore light is the best way. You can also run a tight cleaning patch down the bore and feel for any rough spots, but I'd prefer to see it as well.

If you're going to refinish, I'd take the time to do some wood removal and stock shaping, thin down and shape the forend at least. Those things can be great shooters!

Yep, just addressing the fact that it is well known and not disputed that there were earlier flintlock guns made by the Hawken family.

It is a very well-known fact that members of the Hawken family made flint rifles and I don't think it was ever disputed. The only questions I have ever seen are, were the fully developed plains style rifles made by the Hawkens ever made in flint, or in full stock.

What is the issue with it in flintlock form? If it just isn't reliable, you could get one of the L&R replacement flint locks. Those early CVA flintlocks aren't very good.

Welcome to the forum, love the opossum! You’ll be able to get all the info you need here, I’ll just add one thing, paper cartridges are for muskets, you’ll want to use patched round balls.

The very first thing to address are the threads for the nipple. These have to be in good shape, if not they need to be properly repaired before even thinking of shooting it. Next is the bore, if it is very rough and pitted, you may want to reconsider shooting it and relegate it to a wall hanger.

Those look like vise marks on the barrel, either from when it was made or when someone removed the breechplug at some point.
