Where can you find brass slotted flathead woodscrews ?

Exercise caution when using small brass screws. Sometimes they can twist off in the wood before they are driven home. If you do use brass, rub candle wax onto the thread. That will lube the screw and ease the installment of the screw. You might have to back the screw out once or twice to...

    Walker or Dragoon ?

The answer you’re looking for is simple. You have two hands. Get one for each. Problem solved…or not. I have both. Sometimes I spend hours arguing with myself which one to shoot. One is for odd numbered days, while the other is an even day shooter. Unless of course the odd day falls on a...

A stocking stuffer patch knife for my sidekick (SIL)

An old neighbor gave me a box full of those things about thirty years ago. They were old then…. I might dig them up to check the possibilities to do the same thing. 👍

    Vinegar and steel wool stain

I’ve used 0000 steel wool and fresh white vinegar for a solution. I made a couple of tables using old barn wood. When I had to cut the antique wood, or add a piece of newer wood I used the vinegar. It camouflaged the fresh cuts in the old lumber and the new pieces of wood. Several coats...

1863 Shiloh Sharps Model 100 Rifle

My old high school teacher and friend, lost almost all of his small gun collection in a fire. Only two guns were salvaged. They were both very old, late 1950’s- early 60’s Uberti revolvers. They were sent back to Navy Arms where they were purchased from and were completely reconditioned by...

    Scottish Deer Rifle

That piece alongside the muzzle could be for a bayonet or hunting sword of some type. The notch in the middle of the metal rod could be for a locking device, catch, latch, something to secure the item onto the rod. Maybe ?

Patriot pistol wood blemish - how to deal with it

I think I might try some medium to fine grit sand paper. Wrap it around a flat stick and use that to sand down the damaged area. Or, you could use a couple of those foam backed emery boards women use to file their nails with. The stock is walnut. It should be easy to dab on some color, or...

I just couldn't help myself today

A friend of mine bought one of those Frontier rifles in kit form about 35-40 years ago. I don’t remember if it have a brass butt plate or not. It was a .50 cal rifle. As life would have it, the kit was never assembled and it has been lost to time. From what I remember, it looked promising...

    My Cold Steel hawk

I have that same hawk head and the spiked hawk, both from Cold Steel. It was a bear to get that black finish off. Taking a break from working on them… I got the proper sized screw and filled the threaded hole on the side of the eye. I peeled down the screw and just filed it. Almost...

What brands would you not recommend and why?

Interesting question. I’ve had absolute miserable experiences with two custom rifle makers. Both of whom I would never recommend. For one project, I ordered a Getz barrel. After many years of nothing but excuses, I finally received the item purported to be a custom flintlock rifle...
