I acquired 3 new to me rifles today. Two 50 cal CVA Frontier Carbines, one in the Frontier stock (brass hardware and brass buttplate), the other in a Frontier Hunter (blackened steel hardware with rubber buttplate) stock...the barrel plainly states Frontier Carbine and has a brass thimble, so it appears to be a combo gun. Extensive pictures show both guns to be good condition with clean bores and combined total price, delivered is $425. I am a carbine fanatic and been looking to get a couple of lightweight fifties for hunting mule deer. These should fill the bill.

However, the piece I have been looking for, for a while, was a T/C White Mountain Carbine, 22" barrel in 54 cal..one of the older ones WITHOUT the QLA. they are out there, mostly beaters and poorly taken care of and severely overpriced. Lots of QLA versions, one listed on this site not long ago for a decent price, but QLA.

Well I found one today in pristine condition, frankly for about $75 too much, but what the hell...I don't have a wife to answer to (see the Excuse Thread...) and I sure don't want to die with money in my pocket, so I bought it. Besides, whenever I got a raise (when I wasn't retired) the first month of the raise ALWAYS went to a gun. On 1 Dec I get a raise in SS/Military Retirement/VA Disability, so there you have it. Need to follow tradition, by God.

That was my Black Friday shopping.

A friend of mine bought one of those Frontier rifles in kit form about 35-40 years ago. I don’t remember if it have a brass butt plate or not. It was a .50 cal rifle. As life would have it, the kit was never assembled and it has been lost to time. From what I remember, it looked promising to put together and shoot.

Nice going! A CVA Frontier that I bought from a member here was my 1st BP rifle. It's a great shooter and it got me hooked.

They made several versions...A Frontier Hunter with laminate stock, a hunter with plain wood stock as pictured, both with blackened hardware, Frontier Carbines with brass furniture, some with plastic stocks, some with two bolt lock plates, other with single bolt lock plates, hooked breeches/button breeches. Kit guns, fully assembled guns.

It seemed that there was a smorgasbord of selections.

I have two 54s in the Frontier Hunter Laminate stocks. One is a 24" with original barrel 1:48 twist and another has a Mountain Stalker barrel in it, 26" 1:38 twist. Kind of like Lays potato chips, can't have just one!

The CVA pictured was a rip off...The bore was trashed even though the bore was advertised as like new and the seller assured me it was like new....rusty, pitted and an absolute mess. The pics showed the bore at muzzle, which had been worked on obviously. I got a refund on that gun and sent it back.

The other CVA I bought has a decent bore...not great, but useable. It will make a great loaner gun.

The T/C white mountain carbine was in great condition with a spot or two that polished out with steel wool on a jag

I burn a lot of pyrodex and I don’t have and corrosion issues. I clean with water and dawn dish soap. Same treatment as black powder.

As long as you do that you will have no problems. But Pyrodex is even less forgiving than BP for guys with sloppy cleaning habits.

Sorry to hear, glad you got a refund though. Been burnt a few times myself. Wife bought what she was told was a t/c Hawken at a yard sale once, with " a perfect bore ", as the seller told her "I kept it oiled up real good". Turned out to be an Invest Arms with a sewer pipe bore beyond use. Wife was clearly taken advantage of and only wanted to surprise me. Some people.

Don't matter, the topic isn't about pyrodex,,
If you wanna cut paper, the truth is, it's all about how the gun is cleaned.
Ya Wanna defeat or dis one powder against another? Knock yourself out,, it's been done for decades. Your not learning or sharing anything different.
And the argument is mute.

Walk, I've found while looking at used MLs if you find one with a badly corroded barrel it often is the result of the previous owner using Pyrodex without using proper cleaning methods. Pyrodex is less forgiving in that respect.

People who misrepresent and/or hide the condition of any item offered up for sale on the internet are just plain crooks. If unsure of condition or function a seller should so sate it.

Before GB started collecting sales tax I was charged sales tax of the rate the state I bought from. When questioned the seller explained the tax legislation had changed the previous month and it was now required to collect tax on out of state sales, I think it was Oklahoma. Nothing in government works that fast so I called his state verifying I should NOT have been charged tax, no such law had been passed. The state said I could file for reimbursement from them, it was an insignificant amount in dollars but not principle. I contacted the seller explained there must have been a misunderstanding and informed I would be filing paperwork with his state to get my tax refunded. He immediately offered to refund the sales tax amount, I accepted.

Who is GB? And why is GB charging you sales tax for buying/selling anything?
Did you get a 1099 from "GB" for your tax paid in that year?
