    MuzzleBlast Rod Abrasive Test

Good article, thanks for taking the time to post. I use 3/8" Brass rod and bore-guide and do the best I can not to abrade the muzzle while cleaning or loading. I do the same on my long range or bench rest rifles and statistics beyond that are always interesting and worthwhile to read but of...

    Question on making lead ingots

Ive used muffin pans with mixed results, the aluminum ones are easily bent when you toss them upside down to knock the lead out. Agree with the tinned sticking and steel release without too much problems. I have some cast iron teddy-bears to go with the corn cobs..

    Lube for Maxi

Seems like Lee Loaders used to come with a piece of tubing "the right size" to use as a cookie cutter for pan lubing, you just kept cookie cutting and each bullet pushed the last one out the top so you didn't have to use a stick through a primer pocket hole.

    Pan brush and measure

Lots of made in china "bristle" brushes sold as throw-aways for stain or in housewares at wally world for brushing butter on stuff. Might work.

    Thread size for GPR ramrod?

Things may still go wrong but it makes for one less thing to feel so dang dumb about

Lee 18 Cavity Buckshot bullet Mold

I would think that you could run them through a .310 sizing die and just end up with a little longer bearing surface. Orient them sprue-wise when sized and loaded, they might work well or at least provide for a reliable supply of shoot-able balls. Just a thought, I haven't tried this with balls...

When casting, what's a sub for a leather apron?

I like the egg carton idea.

When casting, what's a sub for a leather apron?

I always cast standing at a bench or table. I've never worn gloves. I cast several molds at once, using the number of molds to pace my casting and keep all the molds at the right temp without getting bored or overheating them (if a mold starts to throw frosty bullets or balls I add another mold...

    Worn out nipple?

If it always fires on the second try it sounds to me like the nipple may have mushroomed a bit and it's taking the first hammer fall to fully seat the cap. I'd try to clean up the nipple a bit while you are getting a new one and a spare or two.

    Question about rum horn

I have heard that beeswax can flavor the contents over time and more so during hot months. My $.02

    Help with my gun

Plain water (doesn't need to be hot) is the best thing for cleaning black powder fouling at the end of the day. Alcohol can help dry it all out once its clean, then something to grease the bore to prevent it rusting. You might run a patch the next day to make sure it isn't rusting when you think...

I've been meaning to just go ahead and put feathers and a point on my ramrods for just such occasions.

Many thanks for all the help

You, uh, wouldn't mind sharing your ball, patch, lube, powder info for that 85 yd cloverleaf group from your GPR would you? :) Good Job!

    Ok, I'm dumb...

Nah, if you were dumb you would have taken the lock apart and started filing something down. You, uh, didn't do that did you?

    Lyman Great Plains percussion

The GPR is a great shooting rifle and a good value for the money. That crescent buttplate is not shouldered like a modern rifle, the crescent goes just above the bicep and not in "the pocket" of the shoulder. It should be very comfortable when shouldered in the appropriate fashion.

    Rifle Twist?

The problem with RB is a poor ballistic coefficient (it loses velocity at a horrid rate) and a short bearing surface that is prone to stripping as others have noted. The sphere needs little rotation to stabilize so one can balance the use of a slow rifling twist as in 1-60” to 1-70” to allow...

    modern bullets for hunting

This actually sounds like the perfect opportunity to .. get a bigger rifle.. I once ordered a blanket rifle case and it was just too long .. so.. I bought a longer rifle, it was just the excuse I needed. If it would help I'm sure we could come up with a good post you could copy to show the...
