Best way to safely remove rust

I did not know that about the M21 but it makes good sense. I agree with stripping finish. With regard to drying the stock the vacuum itself, if done long enough or in repeated stages depending on the durability of the vacuum pump should take care of a lot of that (perhaps a desicant as well)...

    Help Fixing Up Inherited Muzzleloaders

Just a quick thought about the $80 price. I remember gas going up to $ 0.85 a gallon and decimating a climbing trip budget to Washington and Oregon. I had also just started teaching high school (It turns out I collect occupations) and was making about $7,000 a year so.. $80 was a good bit of...

lead hardness of patched round balls

I would agree .490 ball in .50 cal or .530 ball in .54 cal. etc. Most have prob tried .435 and .535 balls to obtain smaller groups (I just move closer) but it can be a lot harder to load, which makes it less fun and my front sight wandering about is my biggest barrier to smaller groups. Pillow...

Best way to safely remove rust

Search for "resin restoration of wood" online. Usually includes vacuum chamber (PVC probably would work for a rifle stock) to remove moisture and air from the wood then a resin is introduced and fills all the empty spaces. Used to stabilize old historic items. Seems like a system could be...

    Question for alloy/casting experts

P.S. If OP has has easily cast projectiles with this and it cast well.. it isn't likely to be zinc and it certainly wouldn't be cast iron or steel. Also zinc will ring when tapped (at least wheel weights) and it does melt at a somewhat higher temp (787F) than lead (621F) although not too much...

    Noob issues

[ A lot of good suggestions and great photo. Can see the thought balloons.. "This next block always has really great garbage." "Bob's gonna be so pissed he missed the truck today" "Worth every penny I pay this driver" "The quality of garbage today just isn't like when I was a kit"

    Question for alloy/casting experts

Sure looks like Linotype ingot to me. Wonderful for those alloys we can't push down a rifled barrel with a stick. Usually goes for a bit of a premium over pure lead or wheel weights for alloy use. You could sell/trade and buy pure lead for muzzle loading rifle use. It would work fine for...

Tired of wasting lead. Bullet trap ideas?

Lots of great ideas in this thread, I've tried a lot of them and each has it's perfect place. I imagine that like most of us I keep my stock of scrap lead in wooden boxes or plastic buckets etc. and move them around on a 2-wheeler. I bet I can't shoot through a box or bucket of lead too easily...

    Thinking of Mike Ameling

I think of Mike every time I use the beautiful Burgundian fire steel he made for me. I didn't realize how long he has been gone. Time slips past us all I guess.

    Raw black English flint

Dont forget the Bandaids... a large box of Bandaids. I recommend the fabric type since they seem to last long enough for the healing to start. It is a lot of fun and a skill well worth the time spent to acquire. If I ever actually acquire it I'll post again to notify our community of the event...
