    Made a range ramrod support.

The range where I shoot has loading benches made of Trex with the corners cut off of each board making a series of Vs along the edge, Very handy for rifles and rods.

When I built my first non-kit rifle his book was my primary reference.

    Paper Cartridge Woes

I f you are using the Guns of the West kit you aren't following Dustin's directions if you have those things sticking out over the ball. I suggest watching his video on using the kit.

That's an amazing collection. I bet he picked them up for peanuts back when they were just old worn out guns.

    Revolver percussion caps

Order them online from Slixshot They sell sets of nipples especially for each pistol and also have a very nice nipplewrench.

    Revolver percussion caps

I ordered my Navy from Taylor's in Dec. It's the only CB revolver I've ever handled. I only had #11s and 12s on hand. The 11s would just fall off the nipples. Slixshot web site said theirs would fit 11s. I had both CCI and Remingtons on hand. Both work fine.

    Revolver percussion caps

I too recently got a 51 Navy. I notice the factory nipples require #5 caps. I replaced them with Slixshots which take the much easier to find but still #11s.

    Philly Derringers?

My first BP gun was a CVA derringer I built from a kit. It came out nice and got me started building guns. I only shot it a few times because there seemed to be a leak between the breech plug and barrel. There was a distinct discoleration alomg the joint.

    Need some advice

You can use toy caps with tap-o-cap caps if you are uncomfortable with mixing the primer. There are numerous threads here and videos on YouTube about how to do it.

Knowledge on barrels made in the 1970s through 1990s

Douglas barrels were known for their accuracy and runout. They just needed to be breeched with the runout pointing either up or down so it could easily be accounted for with sight elevation.

    Toeplate thoughts

I built a poor boy with a toeplate and a piece of antler at the top of the butt. Got protection without the hassle of inletting a buttplate.

    Lack of younger shooters?

Of my 4 grandkids only the youngest who is 9 is interested in shooting. He has an arsenal of toy guns. He considers my TC Hawkin as his and loves my 51 Navy. I only let him shoot under VERY controled conditions. He knows power patch ball, but I cap at the firing line with the gun on a rest.

Thought the third time would be a charm but it wasn't

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Now I have something to work with. I was thinking about just going back to the flintlocks I build myself and know how to work with. My first step will to try the stock nipples which seem to be a bit shorter.

Thought the third time would be a charm but it wasn't

I watched the videos. Thanks Rich44. The hammer does touch the nipple with no cap. The slixshots are a little longer than the stock nipples. That's probably the problem. I can't use the stock nipples because all I can get is #11 caps, and they fall off. Guess I will only load 5 and won't have a...

Thought the third time would be a charm but it wasn't

I use CCI #11s on Slixshots. They slide all the way on easily. Sounds like I definitely have late bolt reset. What can I do about it?

Thought the third time would be a charm but it wasn't

Took my Pietta 51 Navy to the range for the third time. Aside from the 50 mph winds everything went great until I tried to lower the hammer onto a safety pin on a fully loaded cylender and missed and let it down on a capped nipple. The gun completely locked up. The hammer wouldn't cock at all...

    Colorado Rondys

I was at Ft Lupton today with my grandson. We had fun but it was a challenge with the 50 mph or so wind.

I have a question for the Smoothbore crowd

How can you get a .620 ball plus patch down a .580 barrel. You must have a huge hammer.
