    New TC Hawken Barrel

A little while back I purchased a new old stock TC Hawken 15/16" 50 caliber barrel, finally swapped the Green Mountain barrel and took it out to the range. I wanted a barrel for shooting the Maxiballs that I cast. Shot only at 50 yards, but 2 of 3 were touching and the other was 1" away after...

    First Muzzleloader Shoot

Discovered we had a local muzzleloader club when I started going back to the local range back in July. Well I finally managed to make a meeting, and was invited to the shoot they hold the Saturday after their meeting. Went yesterday and had a great time, wish there were more members, but...

    Getting There

Will say, that in spite of the accuracy, the condition of the patches was a little disconcerting. Not going to obsess if I continue to get this kind of results, but something I will contemplate a little.

    Getting There

Had an hour to spare, so I drove up the hill to a shooting spot and set up at 50 yards. I shot both .495" balls (picture) from my Green Mountain mould, and .490" from a Lee 6 cave mould. Patch was .020 linen lubed with a mixture of beeswax, coconut oil, and Crisco. 80 grains of Goex FFFg was...

    T/C 15/16" barrel

Yes sir, error on my part, the rear hole is .110, and the front is .106. That's what I get for rushing.

    T/C 15/16" barrel

So the holes for the rear sight are as follows: .010 for the rear hole, and .006 for the front hole. I was hoping for a 58 smoothie, but I am thinking a 56 is more likely.

    T/C 15/16" barrel

What would be the largest smooth bore a 15/16" barrel could be opened to?

    Casting

Back to the drawing board! Swaged Hornady .490 balls, 70gr FFFg Goex, .018 patch and an RWS cap, 1.5" at 50 yards off my shooting sticks, my .490 from the Lee mould was easily twice that with the same combo, powder charge up or down netted the same result. The .495 ball from the Green Mountain...

    Casting

Lee moulds take a little more care, but they generally cast really well.

    Casting

I cast thousands upon thousands of projectiles every year, from 32 caliber pistol, to 525gr 45 rifle bullets. Fired up the pot today to put my 6 cavity Lee .490 round ball mould to use. Didn't take long to remember that you still have to pay attention to what you're doing. About 20 out of 80...

    50 Caliber PRB with FFFg

Well this was a combo I'd tried before, albeit with a lower powder charge, and accuracy was definitely better. Only disappointment were the shots with balls from a .490 T/C mould, didn't try any .490 from my Lee mould. The ones I cast and shot yesterday have what I feel is a large sprue and I...

    50 Caliber PRB with FFFg

So I have tried 50, 60, 70, 80, and now 100 grains of powder. Yesterday was the best so far for accuracy. Fouling was not good, wonder if I am over lubing my patches? Second shot was a bear to seat since in my haste, I left my range rod at home. Getting ready to fire up the casting pot now...

    50 Caliber PRB with FFFg

Took delivery of a Green Mountain .495 mould today, ordered some thicker patch material too. Shot today, but had to stop after just 3 shots. Only 50 yards, but shots were touching with a 100gr charge of FFFg.
