Nose cap. If you mean the trim piece at the end of stock towards the muzzle, then yes. Seems to be solid brass. The wedge escutcheons are brassish. Could be silverish too. I put one the buffing wheel. It actually shined somewhere between silver and brass. Took that to mean thin plating. The...

The previous owner referenced it as a Hawken. Don’t know if he was talking in general or specifics, but all good info trying to figure this out. Thanks

Ok, I ordered the Greenville County book to get me started. Over last ten years I’ve been purchasing books on Muzzle loaders, but none are gunsmith types. I’ve been putting all this off till now. I really appreciate the info this forum so easily shares. Funny side note. Ten minutes or so before...

Don’t jinx me now, but I love a good challenge. Slow and steady. I’ll feather out from center, once started, I’m committed and there is no replacement. All the more reason not to but, I’m going to give it a try.

I can do that with an angle grinder and finish off with orbital sander, then hand sand for polishing then tap in place. I like this idea vs the puddy fill idea.

Are you referring to the front sight measurements? I measured in metric with digital calipers as well but haven’t found any for sale in metric. This pursuit will probably nickel and dime me to the poor house, but I need a sight so, what a ya gonna do. thank you so much for this. This tells me a...

Of possible interest. This wood seems very oily. I’ve made the statement that this was Turkish/English Walnut. The assumption made from its grain and likely European origin. But while hand sanding it’s quite noticeable. Have worked with an oily wood before like this and it was Teak. I’ve never...

So the tang will come after the following. So I just finished the sanding around the butt plate that was grossly proud. It’s now respectable. The top plate of the butt plate fits decently. But the butt part to wood has gaps. Here’s what I’m going to try. In theory, titebond wood glue should not...

Ordered these front sights from Muzzleloader Builders Supply. The base is supposed to be 3/8”-.375”, These arrived measuring 23/64”-.366”. Enough difference that they just slide through.
