    Horrible experience with Plum Brown

So, about 12 years ago I refinished a TC Hawkins barrel with Plum Brown and loved the consistent, deep brown purple finish I got with it so I went ahead and just used it on my Woodsrunner barrel. Five coats later and the result is the horrible finish in the picture, a blotchy mess, and that's...

    Stock coming in too dark

Well the 2nd coat of oil is on and we'll see how it buffs out.

    Stock coming in too dark

Thanks all for the advice so far. My optimism is higher today than it was yesterday after using a combination of 0000 steel wool, gray ScotchBrite, and 1500 grain wet/dry sandpaper to lighten the stock a decent amount. I'm getting more of the fiery flame effect I was going for now. I did put...

    Stock coming in too dark

I wasn't clear that I just want to do something to increase the contrast of the curl with the existing stain. The stock actually showed better curl without the oil coat and now the browns and blacks are too close in tone in my opinion. I was hoping for more of an orange tone.

    Stock coming in too dark

I just applied my first coat of Jim Chambers oil finish over an Aquafortis curly maple stock. The color is too dark to my liking and I was wondering if it'll be too late to try to lighten the stock after the first coat dries after 24 hours? Also looking for suggestions on how I may be able to...

    54 Caliber Woodsrunner Hunting Loads

Thank you! This will make a great starting point once my Woodsrunner is ready for the range.

    54 Caliber Woodsrunner Hunting Loads

Been reading a lot about how to best identify the load that best groups within a muzzleloader. That said I'd like to hear very specifically what 54 caliber Woodsrunner owners settled on as their hunting load. I'll be shooting PRB at whitetail, hopefully. Ball width? Patch width? Grain size...

    Blackened Brass

Anyone blacken brass while on the gun? I think I want to blacken this Woodsrunner brass but the thought of screwing up the curly maple is giving me pause. I've blackened removable Hawkins brass without issue, but any tips for doing it while on the gun?

    Woodsrunner build help....

This issue was resolved by using a 2 inch 4-40 stainless screw with light oil to tap the cap holes in an improvised way. Once I new I was dealing with 4-40 size screws and wouldn't totally be mashing the threads it was pretty straightforward to attach the cap. What's funny is that in Jim's...

    Woodsrunner build help....

Thanks very much Buff1958 and 2shots. I'll head back to the hardware store today and try the 4-40 screws again after a quick borrowed tap. The screws were acting like they were imperial sized right up until they came flush to the opposing side, and then locked up like I was forcing a metric...

    Woodsrunner build help....

Yep, tried, and emailed, and texted from the hardware store. They're busy and I get it, so I thought I'd try here.

    Woodsrunner build help....

So, the Woodsrunner came together like a charm recently with one exception. While installing the nose cap one of the brass screws sheered off. I received a new cap today but without screws so I headed down to the local hardware store to figure out what I could buy that would allow be to finish...

    Thought I was sold....

Well, I figured out I could see Jim's wood finishing supplies on my desktop but not my Android for whatever reason. Now I can see this: https://kiblerslongrifles.com/products/kibler-gunstock-sealer-and-finish Hoping Jim can answer if this finish is linseed oil or tung oil based? I'm no...

    Hawkins lock finish?

I'm willing to try both methods as you've already laid out some pros and cons of the faux finish. Open to suggestions at this point.

    Hawkins lock finish?

Does anyone have a good video or tutorial on how to achieve the mottled, multicolor and fired look of a Hawkins lock? I'm putting together a hunting rifle and thinking that Hawkins lock finish is a good way to bring together the browned barrel, darkened to black brass finishes of the other...

    Thought I was sold....

I can't see the wood finishing supplies on Jim's site like I can the metal finishing supplies. What's this new stuff called?

    Thought I was sold....

I heard that Chambers finish is noted for adding a red tone and the more I saw photos the more I realized that wasn't the tone I wanted.

    Thought I was sold....

......on a Jim Chambers oil finish on top of iron nitrite to the extent that I actually bought a bottle of Jim's finish, but the more photos I saw the more I realized how much of a red tone it brings. If I'm going for a golden or amber tone finish on top of iron nitrite, what final oil finish...

    Lucky little buck

I'll probably regret it, but this meat hunter just let a 6 pointer walk to live another day as I stood there on the ground tracking it in my crossbow scope for about one minute at 25 yards. My freezer is empty and the only thing that kept him alive was a Woodsrunner I hope will be at my door...

Beauty in the eye of the beholder...

That's the closest thing to a Cyberpunk Flintlock we'll ever see. I picture it being used to fight the Redcoats by a buxom woman in a racoon fir bikini. Who's taking notes, this could be a movie...
