    Bore Brush Storage

The reasons the Brush got stuck are 1) It was Brand New 2) It was oversized New brushes will only come back out when they've hit bottom. After a few strokes, they go both ways easily. Walt

CLOSED CVA Mountain Rifle factory style rear sight

Traditions uses the same sight on some of their guns. The part number is 20610. The Gun Works here in Springfield Oregon has them, The last one I bought was $20. It was Blued. They don't have them on their website. You'd have to call @ 541-741-4118. Good Luck! Walt

    Bore Brush Storage

I accidentally grabbed a brand new 50-caliber brush and ran it down a 45-caliber bore. It hit the bottom and didn’t want to come back out. I came up with the idea of using a plastic coin roll holder to keep them separated. These were for a nickel that could possibly hold up to a 12-gauge brush...

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

I do that after I pop the caps. It's called a "Fouling" shot. That first load may not hit the same spot on the target as that of the subsequent ones. This way, all are from a dirty barrel. Of course, the caps come after I run a clean patch down the barrel and apply an empty mark on my...

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

Here in Oregon you can use lead shot for upland birds but must use steel (or other non-lead) shot for waterfowl. My assumption was that they didn't want pellets that didn't penetrate to end up in the water. Walt

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

My argument is that in one weekend, a single Gold Miner using a Suction Dredge can abstract between 600 and 1200 pounds of sinkers from a stream! My shot gun blasts are minuscule compared to that.

Not really. It's all those warning labels they keep putting on things. It disrupts the natural order of elimination by stupidity! You know, Survival of the smartest, I mean fittest. Walt

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

My brother used to read through the classifieds and would find an ad, Wanted, Home for Free "Pot Belly Pig". We'd laugh and say, I've got a home. It's called my freezer! His daughter and kids were staying with us for a while. This was around the time the "Babe, Pig in the City" movie came...

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

I came home one year to hunt with my dad and brother. All I owned was a muzzleloader. I didn't shoot a deer that year but as I was leaving, my dad asked "You're going to bring a REAL gun next time, right?" I dressed in my Period clothing for a BSA Camp Black Powder Event. They fed us supper...

How about not being able to use lead shot for hunting waterfowl but it's okay to fish with lead weights? Walt

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

Our local Shooting Range is for all kinds of firearms. There are only two safe directions for the muzzle, up or down range. The floors are concrete. There is Astroturf in front to make it easier to pick up brass. Anything that goes, bang, pop, or boom is pointed down range. I know we've been...

Got any dumb statements by idiots?? (Muzzleloading shooting related)

At a shooting match down south of me, one of the members was having problems with his lock. We took it out and it was dry as a bone. I asked him, "when was the last time you oiled your lock"? His reply was, "oil my lock?" Walt

    Washing Patch Material

Thanks for the great information! When I started this journey almost 40 years ago, I believe I read somewhere (probably Sam Fadala's Black Powder Handbook) that it should be just touching and not compressed when measuring fabric with a Caliper. It never occurred to me until I subscribed to...

    Washing Patch Material

I did reference pre-cut, pre-lubed patches that seemed stiffer (possibly from the sizing being left in), but the reason for my original question was to ask whether it would affect anything if I didn't wash the bulk fabric first. Thanks! Walt

A tall enough storage safe for muzzleloaders

I have two Canon 40-count gun safes. They will only hold that many if you store one muzzle up and the next muzzle down. They're 73" from the floor to the top. I have a Longrifle with a 42" barrel that touches the shelf above. If I took it out, I'd have another 12". Yeah, somebody could...

Lapping the Barrel with JB bore Paste

I hadn't thought about that. I have used 0000 steel wool with Hoppe's #9 gun cleaner (not the BP one) for surface rust. With light rubbing, I've taken it off the outside of the barrel without removing or damaging the finish. I figured it would work just as well in the bore. Walt
