    Matchlock long

If they're in good condition - shoot 'em - Matchlocks are just plain fun - if you can't get an original get a new build: I have 1570's style built by Rudyard - 44cal - 'Dutch' snapping- style. It's really a whole new experience; the speed of ignition surprises a lot of people - they just go...

    Happy New Year

Yes it was a cracker of a day for Kenyon - I'm not sure which of the mix of Muzzleloaders he got to shoot he enjoyed the most - probably all of them!! Matchlock; Snaphaunce and Percussion. I even managed to get them to the Ferry on time to head to the North Island.

    Buggered screw purpose?

I agree with most of the comments - I don't think it is a 'clean-out' screw at all; for some reason some people want to pull their gun down every time they clean it after shooting; so out comes this screw because someone has said it's a 'clean out screw' - the nipple usually comes out too; so...

In New Zealand we would say a great Totara has fallen - it certainly has; Hershel will be missed - my thoughts and condolences go to his family.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Just finishing up a little day-horn as a gift for a friend. I've had the horn under the bench since 1979 when I used the other half of the pair to make a horn for a 45 I had at the time - no hoarding just saved until wanted!!

    Help with CVA Kentucky rifle

Hi - in my experience with a couple of CVA Kentucky's and helping others with theirs is the way they make the breech it leaves burrs in the flash channel that can pick up fouling and cause hang and mis-fires. My advice is to unscrew the drum and polish the insides - this will help. Whatever you...

Joseph Golcher Lock - Replacement nipple needed

I'd agree - if the bore is OK a new drum and nipple. Have the same problem with an original Ohio 45 - cap erosion had totally eaten the outside of the drum but bore is remarkably good so a new drum and nipple will be fitted when I get to that part of the restoration - still working on the Stock...

.45 cal. Vincent/ Ohio rifle for deer?

I used 85 to 90 Grains of FFg behind a 440 ball - worked well. The longest one ran was 30 yards and it was deceased when I got to it.

.45 cal. Vincent/ Ohio rifle for deer?

I've used a .45 on Red Deer in NZ and had no problems. One was a self build with a Numrich Barrel - a 'generic' half-stock. Another was an Ohio I built with the help of Brian Scott. I had a Vincent 45 - Douglas Premium Barrel again with Brian's help and some input from Maurice Taylor. I used the...

    Single stock for Kentucky Rifle

Well done - there's a lot of potential in these CVA kits if you are bold enough: I've put a couple of 45's together - I just glued the 2 stock sections together as tightly as I could- this sets the fore-end back a bit so the nose cap doesn't fir - I replaced it anyway with a self made unit and...

    Matchlock barrels

I shoot a 44cal Dutch Style Marchlock made by Maurice Taylor - it's a snapping lock. It's a real buzz to shoot - I recommend looking at 'Civilian' Styles rather than the military because it allows a smaller bore. Smoothbores need to be driven quickly to get real accuracy and doing that in .70cal...

    Kit by Don Brown

I was at Kitchener (1987) in Ontario for the MLAIC World's when Don appeared with his prototype Rifle and a 'preproduction' example. He was streets ahead of anything being offered at that time. He would supply any barrel that the buyer wanted but Rudyard was quite correct most were fast twist...

Why are my two rifles so different?

A common problem I have found is 'burrs' in the flash channel and fouling can build up on them and cause misfires. Have a competent gunsmith or someone who knows what they are doing smooth out the flash channels - even opening up to a bigger diameter if posible. I find a thorough clean with...
