    ROMAN NOSE STOCK

Depends on what time period that you are going to make. The Roman nose on the early Berks county rifles was not nearly as pronounced as the late period rifles. Personally I love the roman nose. I make all my rifles so they fit me. I generally use about 1/4" cast off on the stock and a gentler...

Finally the Trade Rifle is ready to finish

Was wondering if I would ever get to this point on this thing. This was a plain maple blank that had probably been sitting in the workshop for over 30 years. Man that wood got hard, I think I spent more time sharpening chisels than I actually spent working on it. I have wanted a trade rifle for...

    cutting and crowning a barrel

With Joe's tool you can taper the bore up to 1 3/4" deep. In effect that puts the crown of your muzzle down into the bore. If you go that deep it pretty much takes the rifling out at the end of your barrel.

    Bend the sear bar up?

It is where it was designed to be Don't mess with it. Jim designed this one so that the sear bar will be in the same place regardless of where the hammer is. Even the new Siler's use this type of tumbler and sear so you no longer have to worry about the sear bar dropping below the edge of the plate.

    Nipple Repairs

Where is the cost benefit? What is your time worth? Kind of like years back I got the bright idea I could save a lot of money by getting Siler lock kits and putting them together. Well unless you have a rather large chunk of money invested in equipment and tools the time involved in putting one...

    Making a flintlock waterproof …

Without some type of gasket around the opening I don't see this as being water proof. Can picture a very awkward routine you would have to go through to get it to full cock, Also have to think that would be a nightmare to clean.

    J goodoien barrel

Value depends on what someone is willing to pay. I have a .45 caliber Douglas barrel that has never been in a rifle. I've had it for at least 30 years. Had people ask if it was for sale over the years. My response was make me an offer but no one has yet. Also have a CM 5 stock blank I intend to...

Where do you get scale blueprints for rifles?

it depends on what you are looking for? I have full size plans for a couple of rifles that Jon Schippers built that he gave out when you took his gun making classes. I had a full scale plan for a Christian Spring rifle but can't seem to find it. Also have plans for a bunch of Southern and...

    Load Database

As you point out no two barrels are exactly the same so I think you data base would turn into a book. I shot in competition so my idea of accuracy is different than many today. The rule of thumb back 45 plus years ago when I started was to start with a powder charge equal to the bore of the...

I forgot to pack the roundballs - but the substitute worked

I would have to say that was a sweet shot

    Safe or naw

When you fire a rifle the gas created will take the path of least resistance. You have nothing sealing that breech plug. Stop and think what is behind that breech plug.

    Buck vs Doe

I would say that the buck only breeding 3-4 Doe's is probably very conservative. Even if you take that big one out there will always be another one to take care of those Doe's . I remember years ago a video of two big Bucks fighting over a Doe. While the big boys are fighting if you looked over...

    Buck vs Doe

When I first started Deer hunting the season was 3 days Bucks only. I now live in central Kentucky. Our license allows 4 deer, only 1 can be a buck. we can also buy unlimited additional tags for 2 Doe's at a time. Even with this the deer herd continue to increase. My stand is set up behind my...

    Another discussion on stock dimensions

I am also 5' 11" like you so we should fit into that average shooter but also like you that doesn't fit me either. there is more to a rifle that fits than height. I weigh about 180 but knows guys my height that go 150 all the way to 230. We also are not going to have the same arm length. Some...

I.D. "Bear Claw" Chris Lapp's Rifle?

I would say he probably got a scalp at the same time he acquired that gun

    Kibler parts for today,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

That is a finish I have not heard of before. I kind of like the color. Would be interested in how you did it.

OK, so it may not be HC correct.......

A few years back I went through all the parts I had sitting in my workshop some of which had been sitting around for at least 30 years, one is a Douglas .45 caliber Barrel I got at Friendship at least 30 years ago that has never been used and a CM 5 stock blank to go with it that I bought from...

    Building a Powder Horn

I do admire the people who can make a horn into a work of art and I have one that I won at a blanket shoot which is a prized possession. I much prefer the style of your horn which looks like someone sitting around a campfire and scratching on his horn. Just an ordinary everyday horn that someone...

    Larger Flash Hole

did you already drill out the touch hole to .625 or are you using the stock liner thinking it is .625? I recently worked on an Investarms Hawken that had problems with ignition plus other problems. The stock liner the hole was a lot smaller Drilled it out to 1/16" and goes off every time now.

HELP identifying this black powder rifle!

What is the length of the barrel it looks a lot longer than what a CVA had? I don't think that is a CVA. The brass bands on the fore stock and at the muzzle go up over the barrel. Makes me think they are possible repairs. The cheek piece, trigger guard, side plate, The thimbles don't look like...
