What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Thanks for the sentiments @Gordoncourtney. You are right. There are places in Australia that I certainly wouldn't camp near water! Bad things can happen where those big lizards reside. The places I haunt when hunting are well away from saltwater crocodile territory. Only a couple of weeks ago...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I just spent a couple of nice days in the scrub, camped under a shady gum tree directly by the water. This morning, this unsuspecting young lad came toward the billabong to quench his thirst. The .54 Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken did what it was supposed to do - roundball, spit patch, 80...

    Making patches

Yep. My patches aren't too big. Initially, quite a few years ago, I did just as you suggested to establish a good useable size. I used a commercial round patch designed for a 54-calibre rifle, using that diameter as a guide. My patches go up around the ball on loading, creating a good seal...

    Making patches

Ah crikey!!! Here I was thinking I was being frugal. @Grenadier1758 led me towards the light! 😁😂 Cheers, Pete PS Still going to use square patches though. :)

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Ha ha. I'm really chuffed with the results of my rifles; it took a bit of experimentation. You will notice that my charge is the same weight as that used by another poster, Idaho Lewis. I give a lot of credit to posters in this forum, and beyond. Honestly, I can shoot well off a rest snugged...

    Making patches

Store bought .018 pillow ticking from our Spotlight haberdashery store here in Australia. Patches cut square with scissors to suit the .54 roundball rifles I shoot - Pedersoli Tryon and Rocky Mountain Hawken. Square patches, no waste like punching out round patches, no need to fabricate tools...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I didn't want to waste this lovely Sunday weather, plus a mate was the Range Officer today. I knocked the rear sight over on the .54 Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken to bring the fall of shot toward the centre - it had been shooting a little right yesterday with the heavier charge of 80 grains of...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Wonderful morning at the local range. I tested the .54 Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken at 50 metres with open sights (removed the peep); I used 80gns of FFG Wano, an over-powder scoop of semolina, a .018 square cut spit patch and a .530 home cast soft lead roundball, all set forward with an RWS...

There would have been a decorative image, placed centrally, at one stage. $2.43 - you did good. Cheers, Pete

With that debris, as evidence, I'm suspecting that's not pure soft lead. I hope I'm wrong. I don't mind being wrong; I've had practice! Cheers. Pete

I made a hanging display for a trio of wild pig tusks. Hopefully, the .54 Hawken will deliver another pair in a couple of weeks; conditions are on the improve now that the weather is cooling down making for more enjoyment in the scrub. Any mug can be uncomfortable in the bush! Cheers, Pete

Remember this Davy Crockett movie scene?

Ah. A trip back in time. Thanks for posting the snippet, Larry! Very enjoyable. Pete

    checkering tools

I can't help you with the checkering tools, but congrats on a wonderful image. You make me want to head off to the bush for a while. Your Texas hog looks remarkably like our variety here in Australia. Cheers, Pete

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

A buddy has one, Mike. He shoots his very well; he's had it for a while now. I have the .54. I like it too. We cast our own ball, cut our own patches from pillow ticking, square. If I recall the twist of the 50 is a little faster than the 54, around 1 in 48 I think - nice target loads from 50 to...

Love the kitchen/workshop comparison, @ Gordoncourtney! As far as cleanliness goes, you got your priorities right. Mad, I dunno, but I bet some tasty wares come from that kitchen. Cheers, Pete

WANTED Want Shaver apertures for 17a

Posting these to you tomorrow @Ghost23. Keep an eye out for them. Remember, a good trick is to stack a couple on top of each other to provide a combo, like the fine cross hair and a thicker jobbie, sorta makes a reticle like one you'd find in a 'scope. Cheers, Pete
