In which I attempt to build a Pecatonica Blunderbuss

I have to say I'm not impressed with the interior machining on the big end of the barrel. It looks from here like there may be some gaps in the inletting on the breech end. We'll see how it turns out.:dunno:

    Old guy camping

A nice rifle, a few good books and a beverage, and a comfortable chair by a wood stove is all an older and wiser man needs in this world.

    Piikani Camp

Leave her home. You can get by in a smaller tee pee that way.

Hammer gets stuck on the half cock: diagnosis?

There have been a lot of locks made without a fly. It's a part that is not needed with a single trigger. As to the OP's lock questions about trigger travel, when the lock is in either full or half kock there should be a little play in the trigger. It doesn't need much, just enough so that the...

    Small mortar project

A friend has a small mortar that has the right bore size for a pop can, what ever that diameter is.

    Small mortar project

Pop cans full of cement work great if the bore is the right size.

Hammer gets stuck on the half cock: diagnosis?

How about a hammer getting hooked on some brush and being pulled back off of the full kock notch and then the fly stops the sear from being stopped by the half kock notch so the gun fires when the brush lets go of the hammer? I know it has happened!

Hammer gets stuck on the half cock: diagnosis?

An auto censor changes kock to ****. It thinks we're talking dirty so it changes it but if I spell cock with a k it fools it. More to the point, if the notches in the tumbler are correct a single trigger gun doesn't need a fly in the tumbler. The trigger finger will hold the sear out of the way...

Hammer gets stuck on the half cock: diagnosis?

The edge of the half cock notch needs to be a shorter distance from the center of the tumbler than is the distance from the edge of the full cock notch. From here it looks like the half cock notch to needs to be filed back to allow the sear nose to slip by when the trigger is pulled. It looks...

    Intro to muzzleloading books?

The newer black powder books that I've seen have more emphasis on substitute powders and conical projectiles than do the older books.

    Old Pueblo Muzzleloaders

Some of the Old Pueblo shooters come down to Hog Canyon near Sonoita to shoot with the Montezuma Muzzle Loaders.

    What's wrong with my layout?

If this is your first build I strongly recommend that you get all your parts together and do a full scale drawing of how they all fit together. A piece of meat wrapping paper works great for this. The barrel is what determines how all the other parts fit together. It determines where the touch...

    New rifle

That rifle shows some excellent workmanship and planning! I like the way the combination of different parts come together to form a beautiful and very functional gun.

One of Joe Woods coning tools will clear that right up and you will be able to toss your shorter starter. https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/muzzle-coning-tool.121223/

    Davy Crockett King Frontier

Looking back it's a wonder we're still alive. We used to hunt each other in the woods with our BB guns, among other things probably just as stupid.

    What is the best book?

Here's a better photo of another trigger with a roll pin that I'll replace. With one just like it I have a clean trigger pull of just under 2 lbs on one of my guns. That's too light for most people but I'm used to light trigger pulls. It has enough sear engagement to be safe and can't be bumped...

    What is the best book?

The trigger in the link I posted has the pivot point well above the plate. Isn't that doing the same thing you mention which is to increase the distance from the trigger to the pivot point? Increasing the leverage acts like the lever and fulcrum concept which will reduce the weight of pull. The...

    What is the best book?

The flat surface of the full cock notch needs to be in line with the center of the tumbler shaft. Without a close up photo I'd guess that's part of the the reason for the hard pull with the lock out of the gun. The notch is angled wrong. Different suppliers sell single triggers with the pin...

Opinions on product for glass bedding a stock that was overcut by a newbie

Acra glas is good but runny. I've used cabosil many times to thicken it up. Avoid the quick setting epoxies unless it's a small job with no chance of error. The stuff can set up while you're still trying to get things into place. The idea of glueing in a shim is an excellent one...
