    Ballistol-based lube?

I’ve know at least 2 very large bucks that were harvested when the guy that shot them was smoking. Both times the buck came in following the smell. Deer are wary of scents they associate with predators. Most other smells make them curious. I’ve known guys that have wiped their boots with diesel...

    Ballistol-based lube?

Balistol does not dry out. It will be just as good on day 1 as it is on day 4. Squeeze out the excess to keep it from getting to the powder.

Why did odd stocks die out?

Except the P1755 continued in production through the end of the P1769 and P1777 production.

    Another outstanding lock build.

What is it and where'd it come from?

Yes, I just didn’t want to make the call without a full top view. Personally, I think it’s a 1795 Type 1.

    I felt this way before

Indians made shooting bags from wool cloth, don’t know how sturdy modern felt would be in the long run.

    Stripping a Buttstock Finish?

But knocking the whiskers off a stock is much simpler than rasping and scraping away the rasping lines. And no rasp is going near a stock that I intend to refinish only.

Acetone/AutoTrans Fluid - Tested to be THE BEST thread penetrating solution going!

Be warned the acetone will evaporate out unless it’s kept in an airtight container. My repurposed military lube bottle didn’t keep it for long.

Lock and barrel finish for fowler?

I’ve seen rubbed back cold blue rust just the same. Only rust blue or brown will actually resist rust to some degree, at least enough to give one a chance to recoat the metal with oil

Lock and barrel finish for fowler?

Everything I have found says the barrels were originally rust blued from approximately 1780ish onwards, everything else natural. It could be a terminology difference. The Brits called their P.53 barrels browned, when they were very much rust blued.

Lock and barrel finish for fowler?

Polish your lock if you haven’t already. After that take a green scratchy pad and blend all metal to a dull gray. Let it age with honest use and in a few years it will look very nice.

Saw an odd smoothbore in a LGS today

It is harder on a phone.

From my dad: Smoothbore 'trade musket'

Very much Belgian made. Nice gun. Could have been brought here to trade with the natives or for the trade with anyone else through a hardware store or sporting goods dealer.

What should I do with an "extra" Pedersoli Bess I got pretty cheap?

They didn’t take a week to scavenge guns from a battlefield.

Probably 1780s-1800 +/- I have no idea of the value.

    Walnut board

You do not need to get the slab flat, just the blank. Narrow down the cup and you loose a lot less wood off of width. Stop thinking like a modern builder and think like the old timers did, who never had the luxury of modern methods. They couldn’t waste wood that took years to dry naturally.

    Old Flintlock Pistol Mystery

From what I’ve got on the subject, their actual location seems to be contested. Researchers have never been able to find a listing for the business in Baltimore.

    Pair of pistols identity request

They are post 1800 British military pistols. Not exactly sure if they are Army or Navy models. Probably Napoleonic era, or later.
