    Hello from Indiana

Welcome, from SW OH. Warning: flintlocks are addictive. That said, it's a very enjoyable, rewarding, & social addiction. The only damage will be to your wallet-and targets. Great fun!

    G'day from down under

Welcome, from SW Ohio. Bladesmiths will always be welcome, in my book. I'm sure you'll find the information you seek, starting with the archived threads. Who knows, you may even catch the ML fever. It's proven contagious before.

WANTED Seeking a recommendation for builder/maker of French Fusil long gun.

I recently got a very nice fuse de chasse, made by Jackie Brown. From what I've been able to tell, comparing it to online pictures of originals, it seems quite true to type (with the possible exception of the lock). I still have to get the book recommended as the most complete on these. I don't...

    Bench Rest Centuries Ago

Thank you for posting this. It's a fascinating, beautiful rifle. It's also reassuring to see that, again, there's little new under the sun.

Any other crazy kids out there?

Filled Testor's model paint bottles w/ black & ran Jetex fuse through the lid. I'd drop them in a hole in the basement floor; shove a heavy plank over it & sit on it. Lifted me & studded the plank w/ chunks of glass. Great fun.

Any other crazy kids out there?

Back when I could blame my impulses on youth, I got one of the little bronze hand cannons from Dixie. 12ga, with a tapered tail and top touchhole. I missed the info about strapping it to a stick, so I held it in one (gloved) hand and held the match in the before flying past my ear.

    Inconsistent loading resistance

FWIW, I get better accuracy with a wadded ball than with a patched one, in my smoothbore.

    Handgun reloader meets leadball

To clarify "snug" a bit, you should still be able to push the patched ball down. If you're having to pound it down, it's too tight - in my opinion. I suggest you try adjusting the other factors (1 at a time, of course)- Patch thickness and lubrication. You could also try a slightly smaller or...

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

At a Vous last year, I found a small, flat,(deeply pitted) forged iron shovel, about twice the span of my palm. It seems to me that it's a bit thick (and small) to use as a shovel, w/out the raised edges of an ash shovel. I'd heard the "history" of Hoe Cake and was curious, so I cleaned and...

    German 54-Caliber Buchsflinte (A Dbl-Barreled Cape Gun)

That's a beautiful weapon. It appears to be in excellent condition. If I were you, I wouldn't even consider selling, if I could avoid it. In any case, I think $1200 would be a bargain. I've seen similar combinations (German/Austrian) at a collector's show priced far higher than that

    Wm Turvey Rifle

Aside from probably needing a lever to open after a few shots, it seems a functional & significant rifle in the development of a reasonable breech loader. In excellent condition. That alone attests to the strength of it's design. Do you know any of it's history? How it survived in that condition?

    SOLD Leather Strap Knives

Very useful tools, which appear to be in good shape- they even have blades. I already have a couple, including my grandfather's, or I'd be haggling. Your price seems fair. I've seen individual strip gauges, often less a blade, like those for that price

    Crockett rifle

Since you've already been shooting BP for a year, this is probably redundant but I'll write it anyway. Get a ball screw and patch worm to fit. As ETip said, avoid the headaches of trying to use a bore brush. Getting one stuck in any bore is a pain - and you will; in a small bore it's a...
