    Bullet casting/sizing advice welcome...

Others have really covered most of your problems. Wheel weight bullets are going to be a real behooch to get down as you already know. For bullets around 400 gr. You can use pure lead but lead that is slightly hardened will shoot better in my opinion. When you get to 450 gr I would be using...

    Conical for bull elk

I make my own with a 5/8" punch. I only add enough lube to keep it from burning. I don't use store bought.

    Conical for bull elk

    Nice bull!!

    Conical for bull elk

Yes I would start with 64.5 actual grains. That should measure 80 gr. If you ue T7 pistol powder start with 57 actual grains.

    Conical for bull elk

I have considerable knowledge with elk hunting, Shooting conicals, and hunting with peep sights. If you look up threads I have made it will give you a start. This is one of my Renegade's I hunt with. It has a Lyman 57 SML peep and a Lyman 17AML globe with Lee Shavers inserts. I have taken a lot...

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

You're 100% right. Two holes are by far better than one. The projectile that stays in ran completely out of energy. It barely got to the other side. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as wasted energy. I want my bullet to stop in the dirt on the far side of the animal. If my...

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

I don't know about the areas you hunt but here in Idaho. If you hit a big game animal and it runs onto private land, you lost that animal. Even going to the Fish and Game will not get the animal back. Since many of our big game animals travel to farm lands to feed. Dealing with the possibility...

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

This bullet is the 408 grain RCBS 11mm rifle bullet patched and sized to fit my barrels. It uses 80 grains of pyrodex P with an over powder wad. This load is 1450 FPS. It meets or exceeds the original load for the 45-70 trap door rifle. This bullet was shot by my son. The buck was quartering...

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

You are saying a 45 shooting a PRB has more take down power than a 45-70? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Stuck

A rifled barrel has less steel making contact with the patch and jag. A smooth bore makes full contact because it doesn't have rifling. Use a thinner patch or a smaller jag.

Lyman Plains Rifle -A stuck ball and grease

The Compressor doesn't work on a stuck projectile. A dry ball sure, I've used a Compressor. There is a huge difference between a dry ball and a stuck one. In my video I show using 150 PSI on a stuck ball. It never moved.

Lyman Plains Rifle -A stuck ball and grease

Didn't you put a jag on the rod with a patch and just push the grease back out through the snail? My video shows no mess.

    T/c trigger gaurd,

I did this many years ago, I will try to remember. I started off by measuring the width. I roughly measured the TC Hawken hook forward to the mid point of the trigger guard. I just heated it up the steel and wrapped it onto the trigger guard. I made a jig to bend the trigger hook. I didn't...

    T/c trigger gaurd,

I actually did a couple of them. This one is one of my 50's.

    T/C Maxi Balls and Elk

I know for a fact what works in that barrel. The Lee 500S&W bullet paper patched sized to .501 with a .62 over powder wad. 64.5 actual grains of pyrodex P. Keep the speed at 1300 to 1375. I harden mine to between 6&7 BHN. I use reclaimed lead shot to harden but 40-1 will work fine. I've...

What Does Your Range Bench Set-Up Look Like?

I use the tail gate of my truck. I use the jack rest most of the time now. It's just easier to get the height correct

    Felt wads???

For well over a decade, I've been using over sized wads. In my 45's I use .500 wads. In my 50's I use .620 wads. The difference in group sizes between a normal wad and an oversized one are night and day.
