    Jame Butler Hickok Howie

I agree. No one who has ventured out into the wild would walk around with what is basically a un-sheathed butcher knife stuck in his belt. 🤣 🤣

Golcher plate with Thompson barrel percussion rifle

It looks like an old original that was rebarreled with a Thompson Center barrel. The builder did not use the TC breeching system and installed an original, rather fancy breech plug and added a side drum for the nipple. The original parts of the gun may date back to the 1840-1860 time frame.

    Percussion pistol ID

To me, the barrel looks like possibly is a Greener's Weldless Twist barrel or, more likely, it was machined to look like it is. I think the marks are too precision and evenly spaced for it to be made using the weldless twist process. I suspect it is an early Belgian (pre 1852) pistol and...

    Best load ?

To all Please remember, The Davenport formula only gives the recommended maximum powder load for target shooting. It's answer is not the maximum powder load for a gun. If you are hunting, the Davenport formula should not be used because larger powder loads will totally burn in the gun and in...

    Question on barrel during build

There's no danger in soldering a barrel. The temperatures involved are too low to effect the steel. That said, if the barrel is going to be browned or blued, the solder won't change color so it will stick out like a sore thumb. As for the underlugs on the barrel, yes, I elongate the hole in...

How To Calculate Proper Ball Size

No. The land to land distance is the bore diameter. Not the ball diameter. If you are going to shoot balls, you must use a patch with them so some clearance must be made to allow the patched ball to fit into the bore. The accepted norm for the ball size is .010 smaller than the bore so, a...

    Longrifles made in Pennsylvania?

Folks: If you want to get into discussions about where you live, what High School you went to or other things like that, please do it in a "Conversation" (PM). It often is private information we others on the forum don't care about or need to see and it clutters up threads.

Black Powder, Is there a shortage?

I guess I have to step in here and mention, discussion of politics and the Second Amendment are not allowed in the general areas of the forum. If you want to get into discussions about those things you must be a paying member and do the talking in the Premium Member section of the forum.

    #11 vs musket caps

No. Not without changing the nipple to a Musket size. Whether a musket size nipple will work is also an issue on some guns. Unless the center of the hammer is right at the center of the nipple, the edges of the hammer nose can strike the cap, slowing down the speed of the hammer right before...

    The g in ffg

I think the "g" indicates powders that have been "glazed" or polished. Bill Knight (Mad Monk), one of the most knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to black powder wrote the following describing some of the processes used in making black powder. Grained powder has gone thru the...

    Cherry Southern Guns?

They can be either. The quarter sawed blanks usually have a nicer grain pattern.

    Change of plans (?)...

Telling us about your hunt in the non-muzzleloading section is fine. It would be a nice change of pace from what we normally get there. :thumb:

    Change of plans (?)...

Skychief If you do decide to use your cartridge gun, please don't tell us about the adventure. As you know, we don't talk about those modern guns on the forum.

    I'll be your huckleberry

Talking about guns that use self contained cartridges, or cap & ball pistols that have been modified to shoot self contained cartridges is not permitted on the Muzzleloading Forum. Because of the subject of this post, I am closing it. People wanting to find out what Doc Holliday or other...

    WANTED 1766 Charleville Musket

I do not want this WANTED thread to turn into a discussion about Indian made guns. If you have a warning or some other information about various guns that you want the original poster (owner) of this thread to know about, send him a Private Message (Conversation) to give him your views...

That is what the instructions that came with the original Colt revolvers tell the owner to do. It works just like it is supposed to work. :)

    Prettiest Cap and Ball

Dawn Wells who played Mary Ann She passed away in Dec, 2020 from Covid 19. Tina Louise, who played Ginger Now, can we get back to talking about the prettiest cap & ball pistols? :ghostly:

    Bismuth or non-lead shot

Most modern shotguns barrels are made from 4130 steel. This steel, even in it's un-heat treated state is harder than the low carbon steels used to make muzzleloading barrels. Even so, a load of steel shot loaded without some form of cup to keep the shot from contacting the barrel will damage a...

    Kentucky rifle build questions

IMO, if the sideplate has a chamfer (angular edge on it), the straight, lower area should be inlayed into the wood leaving the chamfered edge exposed. Before doing this, the lock plate must be installed into the stock. Once the lockplate is installed, figure out where the rear screw hole needs...
