    My Golcher backaction original

Acquired this through an online auction in Pa. Always admired the workmanship Josh Golcher put in his locks and bid on this rifle because of that. Once received however, I realized it was an original. 45 cal., octagon to round barrel with 2 British proof marks that put it in the 1815–1855...

NGD - 1861 Rifle Musket (but what exactly is it?)

You don’t have to size the screws, you buy one each of the threads offered on the various nipple. Nipple $7-8, screws $.05 - .015 each. Unless you have a damaged or mongrel nipple a 1/4” box wrench will work. If you’re going to shoot a musket, best work on the patience thing.

NGD - 1861 Rifle Musket (but what exactly is it?)

Next time you’re in this situation. Go to the local hardware store and buy some short screws with the different threads sizes. A lot cheaper than buying nipples.

    Easiest finish to apply

Before I knew any better, I finished a TC Renegade stock with a Hand Rubbed Polyurethane. It has held up for 20 years now, a hard dull satin finish. Not period correct but I have no issues with it and have been complimented of the rifles appearance.

    Ignition WOES!!

Find a friend with an endoscope, look at the breech. If you have a patent breech, it could be clogged with fouling. The breech will feel flat with a scraper, but if it’s patent, there’s a smaller hole leading to the nipple/drum flash zone. Run a 22 caliber brush with a patch and cleaning...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

In my never ending attempt to improve my scores at the range with my 58 cal. Musket, I cast and sized 25 Hodgon minies and cast 20 Ashcans from an old Lee mold 575-470M. I sized the skirt of the Hodgon to .580” with an S&S sizing die. Decided to coat both with Alox to make things less messy at...

    Question about powder

I’ve never had ignition issues with Schutzen either, just find Swiss to be 10-15% more powerful.

September 2023 Postal Match Target - Let's Go Bowling!

Was hoping to shoot this again, but time ran out. 40 cal Renegade, 35 gr 3F OE, .015 patch, .390 ball, lube Fur Fish and Game lube, off shaky 74 year old hands. 26 humbling points, didn't do much better in the Buffalo bowling alleys I was raised near. Good job Gary! Another challenging target!
