For the Want of a Wire Coat Hanger

Happened to my Hatfield, same patent breech design I believe. Ended up shooting it out after trickling 4F behind it. Either way good luck! I started buying better brushes to clean the danged nabbit breech design!

Got #11 CCI caps in Walmart today

Went in my Walmart today. Anything remotely associated with shooting sports locked securely in glass fronted cases. Targets, cleaning kits and fluids. No associate anywhere to be seen should you want some of this dangerous material. Won’t bother walking to that far end of the store any...

Making your own ball patches. Info needed.

I buy the red striped pillow ticking at Walmart. Wash it it to get the sizing out of it. It measures .015” thick. I then use a Fiskars roller cutter and self healing board to cut it in strips about 1” wide. I cut the fabric so it’s 18–24” long before cutting the strips. Roll em up, rubber...

Used to be on my BP bucket list. Finding percussion caps at Walmart and have Bobby Hoyt answer his phone. After trying many times on both items, I bought caps on line, sold the guns I thought BH could have helped me with. Peace at last…

July 4 is National Sidewalk Egg Frying Day!

Shot with the Treaty Oak Boys down in Jacksonville. Completed my day by shooting the egg. My old Golcher, rear action, 45 cal., dates to early or mid 1800’s. 30 grains of OE, .440” ball, .015 ticking, Hoppes BP lube, off hand. 19 for sure! Needed a yoke from an ostrich egg for score!

Help identifying this civil war dagger

Don’t know, but I have to say, whoever repurposed it did a great job on the reformation of the pointed end. It holds a sharp edge and the blade groove blends perfectly with the point. The only grinding marks are near the brass handle. One of the oddities is, the sheath was used to test its...

    Walmart caps

I looked into having them shipped from a distribution center to my store. After many emails, I was told no. Asked my local Walmart to check availability. If they don’t show in the territorial distribution center, they cannot be ordered.

Help identifying this civil war dagger

Bought this 30-40 years ago. 11” blade, brass handle, on one side it says, U.S., S.L., 1864; on the other you can just make out half of Chicopee, I believe Mass. Might be a Musician’s dagger with the knuckle guard removed.

    Ball-Patch work-up advice

After wiping barrel with alcohol prior to first loading and firing, I use a moist patch to seat subsequent patch/ball. Pour in powder, start patch/ball, seat with moist patch. I use both sides of this seating patch. (2 subsequent loads) You’ll withdraw some fouling, and any fouling pushed...
