    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

I think there is real avoidance of contact with squirrels and rodents around the four corners region out there due to fear of hantavirus. Others with more knowledge on this speak up. However, shooting prairie dogs at a distance is almost a blood-lust obsession with some of those guys LOL...

I did TDY's out West in my prior life. It's cool to see those Alberts squirrels w/ ear tufts - he's an elegant feller. Numerous around Fort Carson. PS Those Douglas squirrels you see around Yakima and Mount Ranier have tufted ears but much less pronounced; also a handsome dude as rodent's go lol.

    Rabbit hunting and gear

Beagles rock. @Trigger , you've got yourself a huntin' buddy now, for sure. You get real attached to them after sharing fun days in the woods like that.

    Ugly Stained Stock

I wouldn't call it love, maybe "respect for the history of use" is a better choice of words, in my opinion. You could buy a weapon, clean it to a microscopic clean room level and never touch it with bare hands, and then seal it up in a nitrogen charged hermetic time capsule, and it will still...

    Gun range lead concerns

Club I'm in is on govt property and they go in periodically and "harvest" lead from the berms and recycle it somehow. Maybe that could placate the snowflakes. Noise is another matter; tough....

I wouldn't mess with it, myself, except maybe clean exterior grime and wipe it down occasionally.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Hey TDM, try this, it's worth a try, and I got improved results with my aging eyes. Instead of installing a peep on the tang close to your eye, put a peep out on the normal rear sight position. Solder on a washer or get the TOW peep:

To me, applying iron nitrate / aqua fortis to a hunk of maple is one of the fun parts of building a muzzleloader. It's like opening a Christmas present - total surprise and you never know what you'll get. It's true the squirrels don't care how much figure your stock has, but still...

I'm going to chime in with the other guys and say those are the fattest squirrels I have ever seen! Never seen a squirrel that chunky at the base of the tail like that.

Me too, Fred. I may try Swan Creek WMA: LINK If I can find a dry spot LOL. Swamp squirrels.... On the other side of I-65 from there is Wheeler NWR, a squirrel honey hole. But, they close it off to squirrel hunting during deer season dangit. Gotta wait for there...

Same here, Ed, but slipping into a soft pine-needle-cushioned little loblolly thicket can re-boot the bad stuff and start you humming IN THE PINES. Heck, just seeing a pine tree can start it LOL.
