    T/C Hawken ball and patch

My choice in my 50 cal. tC Hawken, that worked quite well, was a .490” LRB with a .015” Ox-Yoke patch….With Mink Oil Lube (TOTW).

    Colonial .54 touch hole

Other then the occasional single grain or two, I have not experienced this using 3F(GOEX) with my 1/16” flash channels on my Colonial(White lightning liner)….Or my other ML’s with 1/16” flash channels.

FOR SALE Hawken Half Stock Rifle. Reduced

Thanks. Judicious use of bone black, some red stain, and several coats of BLO gave me the look I was after. Also, many years of use also helped to create some patina….

FOR SALE Hawken Half Stock Rifle. Reduced

Are there any barrel markings on your rifle? Looks like a Santa Fe Hawken from the late 70’s/ early 80’s. I believe they were produced by Uberti. The first models were distributed by Western Arms in 54cal.(actually 53 cal, using a 52cal LRB). I purchased a Santa Fe Hawken kit, later...

Anyone have photos of finished Colonials with barrel and lock left in the white?

    I didn’t hear/blur the frozen…just greyed it.

Anyone have photos of finished Colonials with barrel and lock left in the white?

Yes…I like both the maroon ScotchBrite and 4/0 Steel Wool for getting the desired effects. I also was able to get a worn/aged case color look to the lock panel by applying some heat to the greyed metal, then toning it with the steel wool.

Anyone have photos of finished Colonials with barrel and lock left in the white?

When I built my Colonial I heavily contemplated leaving it in the white but came to the realization that would take far too long for a natural patina to develop give the frequency of use, and my rifle would appear stark and unfinished(IMO). I ended up using a product recommended by Jim...

Barrel weights according to Jim Kibler

I have a Kibler Colonial that I had purchased two barrels, 50cal and 58cal. They are finished identically, are dimensionally identical except for the bore size, Both are 1-1.5MOA shooters out to 100 yards or so using PLRBs. Takes about 5 minutes to switch between the two calibers. With the...

.530 round ball compared to a.610 round ball

For the last few years I have been running a Kibler Colonial in 58 cal(276gr) behind 80gr of 3F. Ballistics, accuracy, and blood trails/killing power are excellent. Recoil in the 8 1/2 pound Colonial is quite manageable. Not much different from my 54 cal.

    Apply wax in barrel channel?

I like Permalyn Sealer(1-2 coats) in the barrel channel and lock mortise. Excellent wood protection from moisture/powder residue.

How do I use my sights?

An observation made after many years shooting with both new and even experienced shooters, the most frequent cause of poor shooter accuracy is seeing the sight picture in a one dimensional plane. Whether handgun or rifle, open sights or peep, the eye/eyes MUST focus intensely on the FRONT SIGHT...

    .45 for squirrel? Powder charges?

Interesting to see your post. I have a 45 cal Dickert Early Lancaster rifle also made my Marvin Kemper. Besides being my finest rifle, I do consider it to be my “do it all” rifle. It’s exceptionally accurate, with fast/easy loading and no swabbing. Very effective in whitetails, and no...

    What Style?

Judging from your photo, given the straight toe and heel lines, I’d lean towards Lancaster styling.

Question about shooting round ball in smooth bore

I personally like to use a .015” patch/Mink Oil) with a .600 LRB in my .62 cal smoothbore. Group sizes run about 50% smaller then using a wad or just a ball. No swabbing for 10-20 shots.

    Helicoil repair

I had poor results using the Helicoil with engine repairs when heat and pressure is present. I suspected the issue may have been the difference in the expansion coefficients between the Helicoil and the adjoining parts(ie. Oil pressure sending unit, engine block, and Helicoil). It would hold...

What load do y'all like for .40 at 50 yards?

I use the same load my 42” TVM/SMR 40 cal. I don’t understand the 10” drop ar 50 yards with your rifle. It might be a sight picture dynamic. I get similar POI at 25 and 50 yards which matches quite closely with the ballistics chart which also indicates the same POI.

    Using TOTW Mink Oil?

I’ve been using TOTW Mink Oil almost exclusively for decades. A tin of it lasts a loooong time so it’s convenient, and cost does not enter in as a consideration. For casual/target/range shooting I’ll just smear one side of a patch(s) with my thumb. Accuracy is maintained with no swabbing for...

Frozen hunts, fowling shots, spit patch

For freezing(or any temperature) I use TOTW Mink Oil…..No fowling shot needed for consistent shot to shot accuracy.

    Percussion cap shelf life

I have caps from the late 70’s that still work fine….DN and Remington.

Did I overpay for this Colt Signature Series?

I have owned a few of the Colt 1851 remakes since their introduction, the first iteration(Gen 2?) and a couple of the Signature series. The first, and my favorite, has the nicest fitment/finish, and I prefer it’s solid brass lower frame. My nickel plated Signature series, with use, soon...
