100 yard accuracy difference between smoothbore and rifle?

Based on my experience with my smoothbores, using PLRB’s, the two designs have demonstrated comparable accuracy of 2-3MOA out to about 50 yards or so. Beyond this range to 100-120 yards, my rifled barrels will maintain this level of accuracy, while the smoothbore deteriorates more then 2X this...

    Brass Black

I like this……it can also be used to produce various shades of grey on steel components. Used to be offered by Kibler, but can be bought directly from the manufacturer.

    Ballistol.............

I have used Ballistol in various forms/dilutions for cleaning patch lube, and lubrication. IMO, it does the job just OK but I prefer alternatives. However, it is my go-to on the rare occasion that myself or another shooter gets a stubborn.dry ball, or a stuck PLRB that’s off my powder charge...

SOLD Gorgeous. 50 Virginia Rifle (needs lock)

Nice rifle! Perhaps the only time you will ever see a Mahi Mahi(Bull Dolphin) inlay on a flintlock!

Most accurate flintlock rifle you own

While I have a few flintlocks that I would consider to be superbly accurate, I would have to give top spot to my 58 cal Kibler Colonial rifle. The performance is quite a consistent MOA to 100 yards with easy loading and minimal swabbing. On a windless day I have been able to ring a 10” gong...

    What ball/patch generally works best?

Most all My 50’s shoot best with a .015” patch and .490 LRB. Minimal/no swabbing with TOTW Mink Oil.

What got you interested in flintlocks?

Having been enthralled as a kid with the 1700/1800’s Frontier era, when I reached hunting age I bought a TC Hawken percussion rifle(l1970’s). After a lot of shooting, and some good hunting success, a couple of years later I decided to try a flintlock. I did experience some difficulties in...

    1/16th touch hole

There are lots of viewpoints and studies on flash hole sizes and designs(ie coned, straight, etc.). The majority of my flintlocks are flat faced, coned on the inside(White Lightning) and have flash hole diameters of #53(.0595”) or 1/16”(.0625”). This size seems to be the perfect balance between...

One Or Two Bores For Everything?

Also residing in the Northeast, a 62cal smoothbore could do a decent job done for most all forms of my hunting and shooting.. But, after five decades and many muzzleloaders later, I’m more of a “fit for purpose” shooter with a fairly wide selection of different styled/caliber ML’s.

    Ok you 40 caliber shooters.

This load works EOL foe me. Depending on the humidity level, I can get 6-12 accurate shots without swabbing.

    Oldest photograph of a dog.

Not my oldest photo, but my most meaningful. Rusty’s Last Hunt….At near 15 years old. Even with failing eyesight and hearing, he was a champ that loved the hunt……Right till the end.

    Interesting thoughts on barrel/cylinder gap

I have found the sweet spot to be .002”-.0025”(go/no-go, and perfectly squared to the faces) on both my black powder, and modern revolvers. Regularly brush/clean the cylinder face and the barrel breach/forcing cone, free of any lead/carbon build up.

    Lubricant for Fiber Cushion Wads

I use the Skychief formula with the olive oil. It works well and maintains its lubricity while loaded without deactivating the powder charge for at least 1 month….The longest time period that I have left the charge in my shotgun.

20 vs. 12 gauge for hunting

Yes. 20ga. Fowler with Cylinder choke is effective on turkey to 20-25 yards using 1 ounce of #6 shot. It will also place its shots using a parched LRB in <2” at 50 yards My buddy has taken several turkeys with the same shot load load with his 58 smooth rifle.

    Real Hawken or not?

Yes I had to zoom in at that to get a close look, but couldn’t really tell from the resolution of the picture. It’s surely not the same design as the top 4 rifles and seems to have a drum-like shape…similar to the OP’s pictures….been looking for some better pics of the Hawken Squirrel rifles.

    Real Hawken or not?

Surely resembles a Hawken Squirrel rifle to me as well. Check out the bottom rifle, #5 at (I believe), the Cody Museum, Wy. If it’s authentic it is an incredible find!!!
