    BEWARE EMAIL SCAM

A day doesn’t go by where either my wife or myself doesn’t receive a PHONY text, email, or phone message concerning PayPal or Amazon. More recently, (and becoming a Senior Citizen), the same is happening with the IRS, Medicare, and Social Security…….Perhaps we would be far better served with...

    Removable Touch-hole Liner on Kibler?

I might be wrong, but I’ve always thought the slotted liner was a result of the early, mass produced ML manufacturers desire to keep production costs down. The OEM’d liners were supplied to them by size, and just screwed into the finished barrel. Of course, the shooters felt that the slot was...

    Taller rear sight

Yes, we are using the same formula with a sight radius of 30”, 50 yards.

    Taller rear sight

The front sight blade on the Kibler is purposely sized to be filed down for zeroing the rifle. I’d recommend that you try this before replacing the rear sight. Of my dozen flintlocks, the Kibler sights are one of my favorites in terms of appearance, visibility, and fine target acquisition...

    CLOSED Santa Fe Hawken traded

Here is an ad and staff report from 1980 along with a current picture of my rifle. Date…..43 years ago I bought my Santa Fe Hawken(kit) in 1970/1980. I soon after replaced the walnut stock with a maple stock. It’s an authentic looking, well made, and very accurate shooter that I still use...

    Kibler - field observations?

No problem, busting on my views is always welcome…. In 40+ years of hunting I only shot one whitetail over 100 yards offhand….and hit it too far back. I got him after some tracking, but the rest of my longer shots since have been from a stabile rest. I will say that even at the closer ranges...

    Kibler - field observations?

Perhaps is just me but I find that when pushing +250grs. of lead at hunting velocities(+1400FPS) that a pound or two of extra weight improves accuracy/stability over my lighter rifles/large calibers, particularly with the longer shots(70-120 yards). IMO, as long as the rifle is well balanced...

Possibles Bag and Powder Horn Proper Carry Position?

I’m right handed. I’m sure personal preference can vary, but I carry everything I need for a fast reload on the right side. Powder horn rides just about level with the top of the possibles bag which rides at my hip. My hunting set-up…Small flat horn, enough for 10-20 shots.

    Bone black

It does take some time and practice to get it right. As mentioned, the key is to get the coloring you want is to use an oil finish that has a sufficient level of driers in it it….Let it dry thoroughly….repeat if neccessary…Then apply a top coat, applied without excessive rubbing to “seal”...

    Ok question on round balls

Given swaged and cast LRB’s of equal integrity, I see no difference in accuracy or precision between swaged and cast. Nor have I seen differences in accuracy or precision between calibers from 40-58 at my typical ML ranges(25-100 yards). Besides LRB weight, the difference between the caliber...

    How is flint size determined

Width, 90-100% of the widest portion of the frizzen face. Length, to clear contact with the frizzen at half-cock when mounted in the jaws.

    Flints??

I like the Fuller, English Black flints I have acquired from Track of the Wolf. I use the 3/4”/#6 in my Large Silers.

    Cleaning tool

WhileI I used the tube devices that mount to the flash hole of my pinned barrel flintlocks, I ended up preferring the simplicity of plugging the flash-hole with a toothpick. Using a properly sized section of the toothpick with a small piece of plumbers Teflon Tape, or even Saran Wrap wraped...

    Folding rear sight

I went through the same decision process and like the energy/knock-down power of the 58 cal. Having shot mostly 45-50 cal rifle for the last 40 years or so, of late, I have been shooting a 58cal rifle loaded to a moderate 1400FPS with a .570 cal LRB. Recoil is very manageable. I have observed...

Can "they" hear me? Do "they" care?

Bought an Oyster back in 1985…….The only time it’s been off my wrist was for carpel tunnel surgery back in 2016. Never seemed to bother mature whitetails, moose, elk, varmints, African game, etc etc…Many at Close quarters…Still looks and functions like new! Perhaps my best investment!

Maple vs. Walnut for SxS shotgun stock

Perhaps due to the English being the masters of building fine shotguns, the term “English Walnut is often interchanged with “European Walnut”. Climate/geographic location is a “major” factor in selecting Walnut for fine shotgun stocks, and it has been a strong consensus amongst the big name...

What historical rifle would you most like to shoot?

I would also like to shoot the Roosevelt 500-450 H&H! A few decades ago I acquired a 500-450 cal. Dominion grade H&H Express Rifle in preparation for an African hunt. Same caliber, and quite similarly spec’d to Roosevelt’s rifle with the exception of island styled locks. Later, upon...
