reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

The only source of worth while source of lead I’ve seen is industrial forklift and equipment batteries. The cell ties and posts are all that’s worth messing with. The lugs with the copper cables imbedded are too dangerous to mess with as the inevitability have moisture in the wire, causing steam...

How many of your rifles have killed deer?

The rifle that has harvested the most deer in my armory is a .58 cal flint lock English park rifle. With a 28 inch barrel. It has harvested more deer than the entire armory all together including the entire number of unmentioned stuff. I have developed a preference for larger bored guns. It’s...

50/50 Dawn dish soap and water patch lube

I’ve used Simple green for years, Murfe’s for a good while before. Why not Dawn they are all soaps? Simple and Murfs were good for the abusive environment of youth field day shoots. Lots of volume shooting minimal cleaning between groups of kids. Upwards of 100 shots per gun. Little fuss or...

    How much Sprue?

I use Tanner molds for a couple of the calibers I shoot. They have no built in sprue cutters. I simply use the heavy duty toenail cutters that look like diagonal wire cutters. They nip the sprues off almost as flat as the Lee molds do. Plus they are spring opening for faster use. BJH

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I’ve used simple green for patch lube fo all my range shooting for years not. I first tried it for youth field day shoots and found it to be the bees knees. My guns don’t see a difference between it and Olive oil for hunting

Which oil after browning a barrel?

Clean Diesel engine oil is what I’ve used for many years. I oil as soon as I get the barrel dried off from the scalding water bath. The Diesel engine oil has more acid neutralizers in it than regular oil. I’ve allways had some after rust no matter what. It just deepens the finish. BJH

    Drill bits ??

Plus one more tip, for any hole I’m going to countersink I will pilot drill first with a 5/64 or so drill, then countersink to the finish diameter. Then drill the hole to finish dia. This virtually eliminates chatter problems with countersinks

    Drill bits ??

As slow as the machine will turn for countersinking to avoid chatter. Most smaller drill bits under 3/16 1000 rpm or a bit less. Under 1/8 1000 plus. In mild steel. You break more small drill bits with too slow speeds, due to the chip load. BJH

How to remover stuck touch hole liner?

Just something to put in your hip pocket. Take a proper fitting screwdriver bit. Chuck it in a drill press. With the barrel in a vise press the bit into the slot. Turn the chuck with a chuck key while maintaining pressure with the drill press handle. Something will definitely give. Of course use...

    Ramrod hole to snug

Also when it’s only a bit too tight burnishing the rod by rubbing it with a piece of polished steel works nicely. Just support the rod get to it with a polished screwdriver shank. Rub with the grain with the rod supported. This compresses the wood fibers and actually strengthens the rod a bit. BJH

    Silver solder questions

High silver content solders need much higher temperatures to flow. Normal plumbing solder 5 percent silver and the rest tin works well for underlugs, ribs and sights. Useing high temperature silver solders can easily destroy a gun barrel due to warping or scaling the bore. BJH
