    Left handed vrs right

I did as we have weak Side targets on our woods walks. And used to do well, until a unrelated eye injury resulted in a scarred cornea in my left eye. Oops that’s a right handed gun shot from the left shoulder. Sorta the same? BJH

Safe light squirrel loads for 45 cal

Got watch your states laws. In pa 40 is the maximum rifle caliber allowed for small game. That being said before this was law I took a number of squirrels with a 45 using 25 gr of fffg. Messed up a squirrel no more than a rim fire with hp ammo. A chest shot just resulted in a hole you could see...

    "Building Blind" rifle is finished

Can you say shock and awe! Great looking rifle, you should both be congratulated. Oh by the way congratulations on a job not only well done, and artistically well done as well. BJH

    20 ga. Bunny Busting load?

Especially those killer white rabbits. For the really nasty ones you need to break out the holy hand grenade. GBG

    Suggestions for Smoothbore for Teenager

If it were me I’d build it for a family project. I’d go to 20 guage as you typically load a bit heavier on shot to get nice pattern density with shot this keeps recoil more pleasant. Use a good barrel and a quality lock probably more importantly. BJH

    Left handed vrs right

In my expierence coaching new shooters I get better results teaching new shooters to go with the dominant eye regardless of “ handednes”. Possibly due to them having no old habits to overcome. Most of the left eye dominant people I’ve run across are trained to be right handed by our right handed...

    Novaculite for gun flints

I’m carefully hoarding my supply of Rich’s white chert gunflints. I use them pretty much strictly for hunting as they spark so well in me big Chambers English style locks. I can’t tell you much about longevity as reliability trumps it in my opinion for hunting. BJH

    Left handed vrs right

When I was still building guns for customers, the number of left handed guns I built was way out of proportion the the proportion of the population of lefties to righthanded people. Probably over one third. That being said it is best to go with the dominant eye. You will shoot it better In my...

    Plugging vent hole

The much better fix is to bend the barrel, though scarey. The resulting bow is only a few thousandths and serves the purpose. No refinishing, replacing underlugs redrilling pin hole rebreeching or shortening needed. Bend and check against a true surface with feeler gauges. Or against a not so...

    beat by a little girl

Having coached Boy Scouts rifle merit badge and literally hundreds of young lady’s and men at youth field days. The ladies were much more coachable, and soon shot with or better than the boys. They obviously were willing to listen better, and apply techniques. One young lady definitely comes to...

    Elephant powder, how good?

I shot a number of pounds of elephant powder years ago. It shot just fine. Black powder burns dirty by nature, I never saw much difference. Accuracy was equal to my eyesight so no complaints. BJH

    how to find center

I’ve used the file method forever. Only difference I used a flat file instead of a triangle. Both work. BJH

    Home Made Shooting Accessories

I’ve allways made my own accouterments. I’m too dang cheap, to do otherwise. I’ve found a chunk of a sledge hammer handle makes the most comfortable short starter handle. With the peg glued into the flat side of the oval crossection. Just another take on the one you created. BJH

2020 How does your garden grow

My tomatoes, and garden bean are in. Dang chipmunks are digging up my bean beds. If my new puppy wasn’t sharing the yard with my raised beds I’d put rat poison boxes or snap traps out for the vermin. I’ll put in my cucumbers in this weekend. I have tiny green tomatoes now. BJH

How about some tips you may have?

When soldering any thing to a gun barrel remember to oil the inside of the barrel after your done. The heat from soldering will often evaporate the protective film of oil in the bore. Promoting rust later. BJH

    Superstitions and traditions

Some Berks county guns were made with prayer holes drilled in the patch box cavity. A piece of paper was inscribed with a prayer or blessing in German, and rolled up and inserted into the hole. BJH

Just did another L&R replacement lock.

Sorry, I never took any pics. I very seldom work on factory built muzzloaders. I prefer building custom guns for friends and family. BJH
