What is the preferred .58 cal. musket target load for the North-South Matches?

Sometime back on the Forum , I seemed to remember that an experienced N-S shooter recommended a "magic" load of around 47.0 grs of FFG.

    Winning .58 caliber musket load?

A while back, one of our Blue & Gray members posted the winning match load for the .58 caliber musket. I faintly remember it was about 47.0 grs. of 2F. Can someone re-post the B&G match load?

    Break Free CLP

I agree. I use Break Free "CO" (Collector) in all the bores of my ML's. It's a superior preservative and easily removed with an alcohol patch prior to shooting.

    Derusting with Boric Acid Bath

Both Angier in his book "Firearm Blueing and Browning" and Kit Ravenshear in his "Metalwork Part 1" recommend using a boric acid bath as the safest form of rust removal which both removes rust and protects the underlying metal. Anyone on this Forum used it?

How To Calculate Proper Ball Size

Zonie--I follow you, but please help me get my head straight. Rather than making a bore cast or using an oversize ball rammed into the muzzle, are we saying that one could use a drill bit shank as a pin guage or a hard wood dowei turned to slip just so into the muzzle to determine land-to-land...

How To Calculate Proper Ball Size

WHOA! Thank you all. But after reading the use of drill bits as pin gauges and using drill press turned hardwood dowels as a measuring tool, my whole approach has turned around. In other words, if we can gauge the land-to-land diameter of the barrel with a drill bit or shaved down dowel, then...

How To Calculate Proper Ball Size

Thank you all for your insight and recommendations. Here's some additional data. The .54 caliber ball I'm double patching with 0.020" linen has a diameter of 0.520 (Hornady). Yes, I could keep double patching since the accuracy is good but it is a pain-in-the-ass and uses up a lot of good...

How To Calculate Proper Ball Size

Have an antique rifle with a bore size between 54 and 58 calibers and a coned muzzle. Have been shooting a 54 caliber ball double patched with 0.020" linen. The load is accurate. With 0.040" of patching on both sides of the ball, how would you calculate the approximate size of a proper fitted...

    Double Patching Question

Here's the range report. Using a 0.520" Hornady 54-caliber ball, I double patched it with 0.020" linen. The powder charge was the recommended formula for the English 1830's-1840's fast twist rifles which is 1/5th the ball weight. I estimated the weight of a 56-caliber ball by weighing a 54-cal...

    Double Patching Question

I just acquired an English sporting rifle that has a 56 caliber bore. Not having 56 caliber balls handy and wanting to shoot it, I plan on double patching 54 caliber balls with .020" linen for a few test shots. Anyone had any experience with double patching?

Military rifles minie vs round ball.

Here's a 58 caliber RB load that the engraver, Lynton McKenzie, gave me years ago. 90 grs. 2F + 1/4" felt wad + tightly patched 570-575 ball. Lynton was a perfectionist when it came to ML guns.
