Second Finish On My First Flintlock

Absolutely beautiful. what caliber is she? Is the barrel unfinished steel or is it bluing/browned? (I ask because the lock looks like straight steel), Plain, fancy, or extra fancy?

    First flintlock advice needed

I'll pass along the advice I got a few weeks ago when I asked these questions: Go find a muzzleloading club, or someone who owns one. Until you hold a flintlock and operate it you probably will never 100% know for sure what he likes or doesn't. If you tell us what state you live in, someone...

    First flintlock advice needed

You can get a Kibler for about $1000, and get a master builder to finish it around $950. You'll have a beautiful well working rifle for 2k, if you want anything special done to it they'll usually charge another 1k for carving/engraving. TVM also provides a finished rifle service and you can...

    Negotiation Time

oh but the quality of that short life could improve dramatically with some patience lol. I usually just divide the price of the item by the number of weeks when I want to get it, and just save X amount every week. So if he wants it in 6 months and its a 2k rifle, thats $83 a week he should put...

Anyone else ever deal with this problem?

I agree with you, this seems like a fundamental issue with the gun if the sights even with modification can't place an accurate shot. Sounds like an email to Jim.

Blunderbuss- Middlesex or Veterans or ????

Mine is actually veteran arms. I mean it fires and its a working weapon, there are just like 2 things about it I really wish were different, because cleaning it is a bear.

    Think I'm about there!

You have me so excited for when I get mine much much later this year.

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

Gotcha, yeah it will be a few months before it arrives, and I'll ask him what he recommends and if we can somehow do it without breaking history too much. Its going to be a wall hanger for certain and we were hoping for more of a light color to fit. Anything other than chocolate browns is okay...

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

I was trying to see if Ed Wenger could do anything like this and he said not without using aniline dye which wasn't period correct. Could a peroxide get it this bright? (Thanks for recommending his service btw)

Of what style is a Kibler Colonial Rifle?

I'm with you on this train of thought. Basing all our reproduction on surviving long rifles might not be accurate anyways because of survivorship bias. Outside of having something like a brown bess for a historical reenactment, I'm starting to feel more along the lines of "If it was possible...

Blunderbuss- Middlesex or Veterans or ????

Be careful with those cardboard shot cards. I'll check the size of card I was using on mine, but I think mine were either 11 or 10 gauge, and instead of firing out when I shot the thing, they were twisting to the side like a valve and letting the pressure through while lodged. I didn't pay...

Blunderbuss- Middlesex or Veterans or ????

Let me know how it fires, I got the Veteran arms french blunderbuss. I think they are basically the same thing. Some observations from mine: It eats flint up quickly. Has 20lb trigger pull with no travel haha. There seems to be a gap between the lock and barrel that loves to let soot shoot...

Rain permitting I'm ready to take a ship as a prize!

Update! The paper cartridges worked very well. Despite being a slight rain me and another forum member here were able to ring a gong at 20 yards and put a few holes in other useless objects. Despite the amount of water around no sailing vessels were sighted and no prize was taken.

Rain permitting I'm ready to take a ship as a prize!

I tried using copy paper but personally it felt too thick and "fake" so I went with coffee filters. The kind I got felt great, but probably a tad bit too thin so I double layered them. They have a nice old feel to them and you get hundreds for like $2 at walmart. They don't cut exactly out to...

Rain permitting I'm ready to take a ship as a prize!

thought I would show my first attempt at making paper cartridges for my Blunderbuss using .69 ball. Any tips or criticism welcome! I know blunderbuss mostly used shot, but I don't have a musket (yet) and really wanted to expand the hobby a bit. Shot cartridges might follow but I imagine they...

Trying to purchase a rifle and so many questions left unanswered.

I'll see if TVM might accept a lock I send to him. Thank you for the recommendations. I assume the Chambers Colonial (not available at TVM) would be the most PC out of the list?

Trying to purchase a rifle and so many questions left unanswered.

I don't think I'm experienced enough in the hobby to have found my degree of historical correctness. I'm kind of in the vague area of "Is it using the technology of the time, loosely based on something real, and it was possible during the period" then I think I can accept it. I'm going to try...

Trying to purchase a rifle and so many questions left unanswered.

By mounted do you mean brass barrel? because the Early Virginia has brass trigger guard, butt plate, nose cap, and ramrod loops. Sorry I'm very uneducated in terminology still. Do you have a picture of an original?

Trying to purchase a rifle and so many questions left unanswered.

Historical accuracy is in ranges of degrees right? Nothing is 100% PC. What for example would be inaccurate about a TVM? If its something designed with the style of a period or a mish mash of rifles we have of that time, I personally feel its good enough. If its something horribly egregious I...
