    Aqua Fortis

That's it, Chromium trioxide. Okay, on the aqua fortis, does that bring out the grain? What I am thinking is maybe a 2 step processes, do something to bring out the grain BUT if the surrounding wood is still too light, then a little stain. What about carved or checkered areas? I don't want...

    Help with bison horn

Not in my opinion. The boiling is just to take an oval open end and change it to round, so you can fit in a plug turned on a lathe. Ideally you need some tapered "fitting" plugs. Pick a plug closest in diameter to your horn and slide it in= pretty tight not not too tight or the horn will...

    Aqua Fortis

I know this is usually used on maple but will it work on other light colored wood like birch or beech? As I understand it, you brush it on and let dry, then heat the wood. If it is an acid, do you need to neutral the wood with baking soda, etc.? Will the color stay? I think there is some...

Need a recommendation on snake gaiters

How about these guys in backwoods churches passing around rattlesnakes.

    Buckshot Question

Well,,,, I guess everyone missed the whole point. Granted pure lead will deform and patterns won't be as good. I was just wondering if pure lead flattened out and caused more damage than a hard, plated buckshot.

    Buckshot Question

You are supposed to use pure lead for rifles, etc. What about buckshot? Modern or do you still need to use pure lead? I'm wondering if the pure lead actually produces a more damaging effect at close ranges.

    Trade whiskey

It's like moonshine. I think some folks have had corn whiskey, aged about 4 years, and think that's moonshine. The real stuff tastes about as good as drinking fingernail polish and is probably about as safe to drink. This trade whiskey was doctored up to "go farther" and sold to the NDN's.

Need a recommendation on snake gaiters

Years ago they used to have a hard plastic gaiter where the edges (top to bottom) overlapped. You pulled them open and slipped your calf into them and they snapped shut. They were light weight and worked pretty good except if you were in thick scrub you could hear branches scratching on them...

Do the pointed ears hold better?

SORRY, I re-read the thing and realized my time frame was off.

Need a recommendation on snake gaiters

Glad other folks have run into rattlesnakes that didn't rattle. I think a high percentage of bites are on hands. Be carful picking up shot birds, etc.

    Trade whiskey

Well good luck but DRINKING trade whiskey takes being PC beyond my comfort zone. I'll go with 40 years old Bourbon. etc. :)

Need a recommendation on snake gaiters

There's a variety of gaiters that will work but if being quiet is a factor you want pants large enough to fit over the gaiters, a lot of gaiters make a scratching sound when wandering through brush. I wear them when I can. A few years ago in Gila NF I ran into two black tail rattlesnakes...

    Earliest date

I'm reading this book "20 Years After", by Alexandre Dumas. It is his follow up to "The Three Musketeers" and takes place in the 1400's but refers to the musketeers having pistols in holsters over the pommel of their saddle. I was pretty sure such things didn't exist at that time but just...

    Sausage time

On the texture thing, that's why I added oatmeal, the rice was okay as a fat substitute but the oatmeal added some texture, I do about 50/50 but as I said, those near me don't think it's that good. BTW- in south Louisiana is "Boudin" which uses rice, so rice is used by at least some folks.

    Sausage time

Thanks- never heard about a fat substitute. My problem is what I've been doing comes out too dry according to some folks that have had it.

    Sausage time

I've been trying to come up with a recipe that can be used for dinner and tastes sort of like Polish or Southern Smoked sausage. I've been trying to cut out the fat and use some sort of cereal filler. Recently I've tried oatmeal and cooked rice along with powdered milk as a binder. I use just...
