    To clean or not clean??

I sight in with a clean bore, then take a couple of shots without cleaning to see where she hits, in case a follow up shot is needed quickly...This is for hunting...When I shot in competition, I cleaned between each shot...

    Cap or flintlock

Welcome from the Piedmont of North Carolina...I started with a flintlock in 1977, never looked back...For those that say caps are more reliable, I call BS...The trick is to get a quality gun, with a great lock, I started with a large Siler, the Kiblers and Chambers are good too...Match that with...

    Advice Needed

Many years ago, like in the early 80ss I took a pinned barrel out of a stock and banged the tang, broke right at the screw hole...This was on my Bob Watts long rifle...I took it to a local gunsmith and he sliver soldered it for me, it's still holding, so yes, I guess silver solder would...

    What caliber rifle to get?

What are you going to use the rifle for?? That should determine the caliber, not what powder you happen to have .

    Mystery Kentucky Flintlocks?

No they do not usually have relief carving on them. Rifles during the 1760-1800 period would, pistols seldom did, especially during the percussion period, which would be after 1820 or so.

    Hand built vs production

I hope you are talking about going after elk in 2024 because you can't get up to speed on using a flintlock in 2 1/2 weeks...As mentioned, go with a .54 or a .58...Buy a Kibler kit in Woodsrunner in .54 or his Colonial in .58...Either will do the job but the WR is about 7 1/2 pounds vs about 8...

Opinions needed...too "out there" for a long rifle or not?

I put 2 coats of the Laurel Mountain Honey Maple on it and then sealed with their sealer and finish...The barrel and lock were browned with their browning solution...I have 2 other flintlocks that are darker and wanted something different, I like how it came out..
