Black Powder Banned at my Gun Club!

We had someone shoot the water sprinkler system at the indoor range. Wow! Was that alarm system loud. It shut down the range as it set off the sprinklers plus the range had to wait for the fire department to come give their OK before they could dry it out to use again. But yeah that carpet at...

    Windex Cleans "right now"

Using water is not harmful to the guns. When I was in the military we learned real fast that water was our friend with cleaning your guns. We had slogged around in the sand, mud, swamps, etc many times. Then they tell everyone there will be a arms inspection in 15 minutes. Talk about some...

    Windex Cleans "right now"

I have been pretty happy with just using some Dawn dishwashing detergent in some water to clean my black powder guns. It works well for me. I like heating up the water real good too. It dries faster so I can oil it up before any rust sets in. Yes I use oil too.

    Removing camo from synthetic stock

I had bought a .22 semi auto rifle several years ago. I got it for dirt cheap because the previous owner had rattle can spray painted it brown. I used simple paint stripper I got at the hardware store. I used the CitrusStrip brand label stripper gel. Heck I still have a 2/3 jug of the stuff left...

Why are there no 40 cal Revolvers?

Considering how thin the cylinder chambers are already on many of these guns I doubt it would be safe to shoot if you bore out the .36 caliber cylinders to .40 caliber. Now if you could get a blank .44 cylinder and bore it for .40 caliber then you might have something.

Why are there no 40 cal Revolvers?

I suspect that the .40 cal rifles probably came about because the smaller calibers were freshened or rebored out a few times. That was a popular method way back then to extend the life of a rifle. They used to do it at the rendezvous they used to have back then too. They had a couple three...

I Have This Other Old Rifle

Well the small horn could have held bullets. Being from maybe 31 up to 36 caliber when the bore was freshened up.

    Traditions

I do not have any issues with Traditions guns. I think they are a great way for a newbie to get their feet wet going with a muzzleloader for the first time. Not everyone wants to get a expensive top of the line heirloom quality gun even if they wish they could.

    Sight question for older shooters

well they do make magnetic scope mounts too. Those are quite handy for red dot sights. Plus you can put it on and take it off without needing to machine in dovetails or drill and tap holes. But if you are hunting where only iron sights are allowed then it may not be a solution. I thought I saw a...

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

I would say that you want a stainless steel barrel and breech. That resists corrosion better than regular steels do. But if you are using a decent patch lube then the effects of corrosion tend to be inhibited too. The lube leaves some of its anti-corrosion ability behind when you shoot. As...

There is an American company producing black powder

Well if it works in a flintlock then that is close enough to real back powder for me. Someone stated above that someone tried it in a flintlock and it worked. Thus it is good to go as far as I am concerned.

    Substitute for lead in bullets

No, not yet. Only Federal regulations or laws so far. Thus you can’t use lead shot on birds with shotguns. Slugs are Ok still. It is quite possible that gun ranges will start banning lead bullets too. It depends on the state though. This is a old article, I didn’t see a more recent article...

    Substitute for lead in bullets

I actually found a lot of references for lead free conical bullets. But at first nothing for round balls. Then I ran across a article in American Rifleman showing lead free round balls. So there are some alternatives...

    Substitute for lead in bullets

They actually have park rangers in the field. They setup checkpoints and check deer tags, hunting licenses etc. I remember having been checked out a a checkpoint many years ago. I also got checked out after bagging a deer too. The rangers popped up out of nowhere on me. Thus adding in a check on...

    Substitute for lead in bullets

With the government/states banning lead in more and more areas what could we use to substitute for lead in our smoke poles? Our round ball guns tend to use a very slow rifling twist. That tends to be fine for round balls but not so good for longer conical types of bullets. Do we use...

    The Revenant.

Well one thought is that when he closed the frizzen and jostled the gun some trying to not be killed by the bear was that some powder could have trickled into the flash pan from the chamber through the flash hole. Thus it might have been enough to fire it off.

    long barrel vs shorter

I think there was a few factors as to why a barrel might be really long. One reason was the quality of the black powder way back then. A longer barrel helped with slower burning powders with questionable quality. Then as already mentioned it helps with some aiming more accurately too. Then maybe...
