    Please help identify this cannon

Nice find. I am inclined to think that it is the real deal. But the bore on the barrel seems wrong. So I am not sure.

How did the bore diameters like say .54 become established ?

Yes, I always thought that it was based on the number of balls to the pound too. When they studied numerous different calibers the popular calibers came out in whole bullet number increments no fractional numbers. Reference: https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=30212.0

Right hand or left hand shooter? 🤔

Well I have the same problem as I can’t close my left eye either. But I also use an eye patch for precision shooting when shooting right handed. I am semi- ambidextrous though. My right eye is dominant but I can shoot with both eyes open for the most part. When I was a little kid the teacher...

    India Barrel Failure

200 gr in a .50 cal pistol would result in the bullet being turned into an obstruction. This the bullet would be out towards the front of the barrel more like shown in the picture. BP would burn slow and a detonation effect would likely occur as it can’t ignite that much powder all at once.

    India Barrel Failure

Yeah that does look like the bullet wasn’t seated in all the way. Or an obstruction somehow got in the barrel.

More Things in Film That Bug Me

It used to not bother me but after I studied anatomy more I found that all of those Movie and Tv shows where the good guy gets wounded in the small of shoulder is actually a potential deadly wound. You have both the major artery and vein going through there along with the major nerve bundle...

    Dry ball removal

I have to admit that I have dry balled a few times so far. But I have had success with dribbling in a few grains of black powder and then firing that off. It worked nicely for me. I haven’t had any success with the screw in the ball and pulling it out. My flintlock has a flash hole insert that...

Storing black powder in a shed

Black powder is a mixture of substaces that are relatively stable on their own. Thus you can store it in a shed without temperature control. They still come across old buried artillery shells, buried grenades and antique loaded guns that are over a 100 years old that still have active black...

Are big bore short barrels more efficient than smaller bore short barrels?

Simple physics a bigger heavier bullet needs more propellant than a smaller more light weight bullet to get moving. I think it is more about knockdown power. The bigger caliber bullet has more stopping power than a smaller bullet. Modest velocities work well too.

    To go left-handed or not

Go for it. It may take a while but you will get used to it. It might feel weird but you can still shoot right handed guns left handed too. Granted it might be scary with a flintlock shooting that flame out close to your face. But that is what the shooting glasses are for too. Yes, I have fired...

When Did the Shotgun Become a Shotgun

The term “shotgun” probably arose when they first started making dedicated light weight smoothbores for hunting birds. But they called them “fowlers” not shotguns. But interestingly enough the ultimate reference the Oxford English Reference says it was officially first used in 1828...

I always find it amazing that our ancestors pretty much invented everything before. Even machine guns and optical sights way back when.

    12L14 Steel good enough?

While I am no expert on metallurgy 12L14 is perfectly fine for a black powder handgonne. Being me I would leave it with a thicker barrel as I tend to prefer overengineering myself. I would not try making it thin like a Fowler though. The original handgonnes used cast iron of questionable quality...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

For some odd reason that jogged a memory about the so called doctor in the movie “a million ways to die in the west”. Anyway the doctor is ready to amputate anything from getting bruised or scratched to being shot. But way back then bathing was maybe a yearly thing so even a scratch could be...

This guy really, really wanted a hand gonne

I had thought seriously about making one myself. But I wound up getting a decent deal and bought one at the time. That was an impressive amount of work to make one. It turned out well too. I would have threaded the breechplug though. But otherwise it has that handmade approach that was...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

One thought about a bit of a pet peeve of mine. It is how in many movies the good guy or bad guy for that matter gets shot in the shoulder area. Generally getting shot in the shoulder or stabbed or with an arrow etc is a fatal wound. There is a major artery and vein that goes through there. Plus...
