Shot the Philly Derringer today to check penetration.

Somebody created a video recreating the derringer shot in the back of Lincoln’s head. He used a dummy ballistics gel head for the test too. Except for screwing up the disection afterwards, it does show that these little derringers are much more effective than we think they are.

I Told a Big, Fat Lie a Couple of Weeks Ago

I see no problems with your logic. But stuff happens. I switched to pig hunting myself. We have jillions of pigs to shoot around here. No need to shoot deer and rile up the Bambi crowd.

    Barry Lyndon movie fakery.

The trapdoors were hugely popular for movie prop flintlocks etc as they could use blank cartridges in them. Plus the movie prop houses had tons of them sold cheap as surplus years ago too. Heck they even cut some up to make pistols out of them too. Watch some of the old pirate movies to see them...

Anyone else have sore raw fingertips

I use those sail makers palms too. They sell them Tandy too. I also use a pair of needle nose pliers or pliers too. It can be hard to pull a needle through even with a hole poked through,

    Hunting with glasses

I use anti-fog stuff on my glasses. That solved a lot of problems. They sell it as a spray or even a liquid you clean your glasses with. https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/reviews/best-anti-fog-for-glasses

Deer hunting with a Mountain Howitzer.

I guess at short range with a pound or two of buckshot it would work. Yeah I think it was a joke of some kind too,

    Showing off a little.

That is really a pretty cool looking pistol. I like it. That wood is quite unique looking there for sure.

Be careful with Black Powder...You never know!

It may be because of finely ground powder being suspended in air versus a pile of it together. You know various innocuous things in powder dust form in the air has proven to be very explosive. Thus a can of BP thst has some BP dust in it gets shook and then the dust gets suspended in the air...

Be careful with Black Powder...You never know!

I was taught that you never ever shake a can or bottle of black powder to see/feel how full it is as it could build up a static charge with the particles and a tiny spark could set it off on you. I’ll still error on the side of caution with black powder. John Smith was probably wearing some...

    Pocket pistols

Nice stuff. I wish I could collect them but unfortunately way beyond’s my means. I have some pocket pistols but they are quite plain or ordinary compared to those.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

I forgot to mention that in the old days when everyone that had been out in the wilderness went to a rendevous or visited a town that had a gunsmith they would get their rifle's bore freshened up. The gunsmith would maybe even bore it out a little and cut in new rifling too. Plus ream out their...

    Why do some homemade cannons

The same reason you see rifle barrels peeled back like a banana.

    .32 pistol?

There are people that still make them today. There are even some antique ones that were made way back when too. Some gunsmiths probably made them to use up some short barrel cutoffs they had laying around after making rifles too. They used them for target, indoor, backyard and parlor shooting...

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

If you use a separate cylinder loading stand and tools then it would not be a problem with a revolver. Now if the bullets are a tiny bit undersized so that they are kind of a slip fit but snug enough to not move from the recoil then that would work too. But tight where the chambers would shave...

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

Well as I was taught and understand it. A round ball bullet does not engage the rifling. It is the patch used on the bullet that engages the rifling. A proper patched bullet will have no or almost no rifling marks in the bullet when fired and recovered. Thus the hardness of the lead alloy used...

Did our forebearers use a shooting rest or stick for rifles?

I would agree in that they would use whatever is handy for a rest to help steady their rifles. From prone position to any other method or handy item.

How do you pull back the cock on your flintlock?

    Probably with my thumb.

    Questions About Bare Ball Shooting

I only know that they used a bare ball as a combat expedient when they had to load fast as the Indians or bad guys were after them. They would put the ball in their mouth to coat it with some saliva then drop it down the barrel. They would even have several bullets in their mouth too. Granted...
