    Cleaning my jug

I've got an old brown jug that I picked up at garage sale. It had apparently had a corn cob for a cork and it had been pushed into the jug. It took me a while to get that out! Anyway now I have a jug of dubious cleanliness. What is the best way to get it clean enough for my next batch of pie!

    Attaching brass ramrod tip

I agree with zonie about not using a nail. I used a piece of brass welding rod for mine. Its held for 20 years. Too bad the rod didn't, it snapped in half a few years later and is now the range rod for my pistol!

Gun left loaded for how long???

I seem to remember reading an article about a gun writer who was examining a civil war display in a town museum and found that something like half of the guns on display, both rifles and pistols, were still loaded! The woman who was the director almost had a stroke when she found out. :shocked2:

    Tennessee Rifles

I have DGW Tennessee Mtn. rifle. My wife got it for me as a kit some years ago. (It helps to leave the catalog with the item circled on the kitchen table) I was attracted to its simple and clean lines. None of the brass foo-for-all and all that. Just the sort of gun that a common man would...

Running ball with a camp stove

I purchased a mould and ladle from Rapine last year. I used the ladle and mould to run some balls over a campfire at a rendezvous for some friends. It worked like a charm! I just dropped the balls into the grass. Just remember to let them cool before you pick the up! ouch

Thought you cannon guy would get a kick from this

I thought it was an interesting site also but these days so many people are PC and I don't mean "Period Correct"! It's a shame that we can't have a good chuckle without having to look over our shoulder all the time. :v

Thought you cannon guy would get a kick from this

This was ewxposed as a fake several months ago on one of the urban ledgend sites. Unfortunatly some of the "anti's" saw it and thought it was REAL! Caused no small amount of fuss. You can't believe everything you see on the Web. :nono:

Should I leave powder in the flask?

Black powder is a very stable substance. It does not deteriorate over time probably due to the charcol content. I have heard of powder being salvaged from sunken ships that has been under water for 50-60-70 years that was dried out and tested and was still mil-spec! My main horn has never been...

    Got Lead!

Be careful melting down fishing weights. Over time water can seep into any cavaties in the lead. Water and hot lead can be an explosive combination.

    Got Lead!

I get my lead from a roofing company. They tear it off of old roofs where it was used for flashing. They are glad to be rid of it. It's dirty with paint and tar and sometimes it's in big(18"x18") sheets. I just sit out in my workshop and cut it into strips while watching "The Mountain Men"...

    CVA Mountain Rifle opinion needed

I have a Mountain rifle that I bought in 1979. The fly is adjustable with a small screw, this could be why the hammer will not stay back. They are a good gun if you do you part. Mine still shoots center after all these years. Enjoy! :)

    blunderbuss arnes? need a expert

I have a CVA blunderbus that I bought years ago just because it looked so cute. It has a brass barrel and uses a .660 bal w/o a patch. I had only shot it a few times before last month. My club had a trek weekend and one of the events was a "Snake Shoot", that is, instead of a stake we shot at...

    Duelling pistol tales

We have a dueling competition at our treks and rendezvous. Two shooters stand side by side with pistolos capped/primed and pointing at the ground. In front of them is a cutout of a buzzard with soda cans hanging from the wings. The range master says "fire" and the two fire at the soda cans...
