So I was at my personal friend /professional enemy today (my dentist). As I was being civil while making my escape after his torture, I remembered, (from this forum) "Dentists have Lead." I asked him if he had any and he immediately shoved a 10 pound box in my hand. Then he mentioned he had a muzzle-loader his dad had built that he never shot because he didn't know how! Now I get to school my dentist a bit!

Sounds like You struck a lead mine. But if You coach Your dentist in muzzleloading, there may not be enough lead to share. :hmm: Let us know how it goes and what kind of weapon he has.

Afternoon Fillmore, I have been hitting up dentists in my area for several years now, about every six months or so. They have come to recognise me and when I come in the girl behind the desk usually just says "hang on a minute" n goes to a back closet n brings it out. Most times I get a couple pounds from each. Once they get to know ya they really are happy to give it to you as they have to pay to get rid of it. Works out great for both sides. Glad ya remembered YMHS Birdman

Air them irratiated lead bullets as dangerous as the depelted urainium ones used by the goobermint? :rotf:

I use lead from old car battery/accumulator (sorry i'm not sure, which word is correct ). I got lead from workshops, what makes triming of car wheels too. When they trim used car wheel, they have to change small lead weights by wheel. After that old weigts are destroyed and usefull no more, so nobody needs them. EXCEPT ME :blah: !!!
Only problem is this lead from wheel weights is a little harder, because it has small addition of antymon.
Sorry for all my language mistake

don't worry about the language bartek, you do just fine. your english is better than a few of the guys i work with and they were born here. i just got about 80 lb. from a radiology dept at a local hospital. so what if it glows in the dark, i can hunt at night.

I get my lead from old telephone cable. I am fortunate enough to be in communications in the Air Force and the cable guys give me all I can handle. I just got a small batch the other day and so far I have cleaned up and poured 189 pounds into ingots. Add that to the 375 pounds I already have and I've got a lot of lead. I still have about 60-70 pounds of the raw cable sheath to melt down. I'm working on a lifetime supply so when I retire I don't have to look for lead any more.

Up to this point I've just bought round balls b/c of being in school (I don't have much spare time to make bullets, etc.). If you can get pounds of lead from dentists and the like, what exactly did they use it for and why are they getting rid of it. I ask only because it's pretty cool to get free stuff, and I just wanted to know why someone ends up with several pounds of lead as waste.

Another source of good soft lead is stained glass craft outlets that do classes and do custom work. Its good soft lead and they are usually glad to get rid of it.

Bartek,

Are you getting lead from inside the battery or are you just using the outside posts and contacts at the end of the + and - cables?

The battery insides often have very toxic metals in them which could cause you serious risk from dangerous fumes.

Please be careful not to use this metal!

Every time they do an x-ray they put a little plastic doohickey in your mouth to hold the film. The doohickey has a thin strip of soft lead in it. Tiny by itself, but it adds up quick.

I wear medical gloves when stripping the lead out, more from force of habit than anything else.

Thank You. I use lead from both sites of battery (inside the battery and contacts for cables). It is very toxic, i know. I bought little gas mask in tool shop.

Here, in Poland, meny guys add tin to molten lead. I'm sure in USA meny of You do it too. I did it not yet, but I heard tin make the lead more fluent. The lead with tin fill the mold better then pure lead. The surface of ball is much more smooth. But as i said, i did't use this method and i have no experience about it. What is Your opinion about this?

thanks for pointing that out slamfire, i ain't figured that out yet. i had to point out to several people that just because it came from an xray dept, the lead was not radioactive.

I got all of my lead cleaned up and poured into ingots. 623.5 pounds. Enough for 18,976 .54 caliber roundballs. I think it will last a while. It's a lot of work cutting up big pieces of lead and getting it melted down but those nice stacks of shiny lead bars makes it all worth while.

Bartek - Can you tell us about muzzleloading in Poland. We just got a nice set of posts from England and we really enjoyed hearing about shooting in another country. Be great to hear of your experience. GC

Bartek,

Many batteries here have cadmium inside and other metals which are quite toxic. I therefore avoid the use of any battery metals from inside the battery. There are too many other sources for lead.

I get my lead from a roofing company. They tear it off of old roofs where it was used for flashing. They are glad to be rid of it. It's dirty with paint and tar and sometimes it's in big(18"x18") sheets. I just sit out in my workshop and cut it into strips while watching "The Mountain Men", "Patriot" or something similar.

I know it, I try to got old battery with pure lead insite. Recycling points here have many times batterys from realy old cars. Some times its good to be not so modern :)

Thank You, but I'm not experienced BP shooter. I can only learn from You all here, not to teach any one :)
Muzzleloading became very popular in Poland. It was very hard to get gun permision under communists, but sport shoting was popular. Since 1989 we have democracy and since january 2004 every one can buy a muzzeloader without permission. Only restiction is - it has to be model older then 1850 or replica of them. Without permission You can't buy powder and caps.
The future of the muzzleloading in Poland is really very promising. Poland has very long and reach hystory of BP guns and meny young people are fascinated about it.
My city for example, Poznan, was grounded about 900 year and the first shoting club is noted in annuals in 1282 (archers and crossbow shooters). The first case of using gun in battle was nown here in 1380. This old club exists to present day :)
We have the strong group of BP shooters in Poznan and in every city in Poland. So You can only wish us to keep this good work :)
