    Ever see one of these?

Regretfully passed on this one a few years ago. No doubt the compression from recoil of the front load, caused the rear load to detonate on occasion was probably its demise. They’re cool nonetheless. Thanks for sharing.

    Wood - Stunning

FYI for those that find the Loudon vs Birmingham debate interesting. This is from a retired Westley Richards employee who I’ve communicated with for many years.. His insight to the trade on the other side of the pond, has always impressed me. His insight on Henry Ward, maker of this incredible...

    Wood - Stunning

In the book The Big Shots of Edwardian Shooting Parties, all the elites quickly converted to BL and only 1-2 stayed with hammers after the introduction to Hammerless. Understandable as all this started in the early 1860’s and ended by 1920. ML barely referenced. Primetime was 1880-1920.

Yes, the wood grain flows as it should thru the wrist and forward.

Another photo.. The inside is as well done as the outside. Doesn’t get any better than 4-screw bridle locks.

Remove post if necessary as it’s post 1865 by a decade. Picked this 15b up, probably the most beautiful piece of wood I’ve ever seen in a percussion arm.

No Cleaning Rod On Sharps Rifles

Doesn’t load at the muzzle. No cartridge possibly stuck to extract (such as a Trapdoor officers model). Saves in cost - same for removing patch box. Govt wanted arms that worked - but they also wanted them cheap.

    E.M. Reilly wildfowler

Very nice. I noticed it on GunBroker a few months ago, looked to be a nice piece for the $. Reilly made a wide range of arms and a lot of them…I once owned a cased 52bore Sporting Rifle- similar era to yours. Guy in Jackson Hole, WY bought it and has downed a few elk. Congrats and enjoy.

I’d always recommend making your own - if you can.

    Halfstock swamped

Alexander Henry (Scotland) built in 1860’s has a Swamped barrel, but not a lot. About 1/16” occurring about 10-12” from muzzle on this 36” bbl. Hollow ribs were very common on nice British work in the 19th Century. FlinterNick cross-section picture is spot on.

    Hawken Classic 2025

Bob Vogt & the Gemmer Club have done a wonderful job with the HawkenClassic! The finale will be worthy for the greatest name in Muzzleloading.

unknown small percussion black powder rifle

Looks similar to Flobert ‘pea’ rifle, in percussion.

Why is this John Manton frizzen/pan designed with this V?

Self priming. Supposedly, when you pour the powder down the bore (frizzen closed) powder will go thru the flash hole into the cover and into the pan - you can see the hole on the underside of the V-pan cover in your photo.

    Unbeatable bore rust

Only experienced it the 1st and only time I tried Pyrodex. Finally stopped after a few weeks of checking every few days..

    Aperture sights

Sights & barrel removed from hook breech, after each match.. put back in case. My settings are the same as they were decades ago. I’d say the previous owners since 1864 might say the same.. Tweek an moa here/there on different days with lighting, conditions and different ranges, but nothing crazy.

    1800s percussion rifle identification

Numbers on stock are probably some past inventory number.. Underside of barrel might have proof marks. I assume it’s a smoothbore ? - although the ramrod thimbles look big for the steel rod. Overall it looks to be piece together from parts and someone stocked it.. the stock probably has been...
