1860 Hollis and Sheath percussion rifle by John Campbell

Hollis & Sheath - British (also look up Issac Hollis history). The round barrel is typical of sporting smoothbores of the period for Brits, probably sleeved/lined to a rifle. (Any visible rear dovetail blank?). Ramrod thimbles also appear much larger than existing ramrod. Enjoy.

Sights for an Alex Henry Muzzleloader

More photos from AH. S/T rifle 2- Volunteer Perc Double rifle - also seen on single ML Sporting rifles. I suspect all but the S/T were supplied by the trade for any maker to buy.

Sights for an Alex Henry Muzzleloader

Yes. Alex Henry installed folding and ladder sights. His early ML bore rifles utilized folding and smallbore S/T rifles had flip up ladder (to 1400y). Also an Enfield style on a Volunteer. I’ll try to take better photos tomorrow.

    1850’s Fowler markings

From the photo you shown there is no bore designation, so from the chart that would be pre-1855.

Ever shoot a loading rod down range? You tell me........... I won't rat you out !

I’ve witnessed a steel ramrod out of PH Whitworth and 2 false muzzles over the decades - all were found about 40-60yds down range. Only the Whitworth shooting realized the recoil was quite excessive! lol Everything was fine in all cases.

    1850’s Fowler markings

Birmingham proof marks. T Phill and ‘twisted’ look to be the same stamps - probably the barrel maker unless the name also appears on top of barrel or lock. You should be able to research on the internet.

    Thompson Center Bought from S&W

CF will probably be there game, maybe along with Encores & Contenders. CVA stopped making Traditional side locks (decade ago?), so I don’t see T/C bringing them back - no market to make $ in todays world. I would not doubt if they build a bolt action ML and call it a Hawken, though. Same as...

    Parker Hale Whitworth vs. Volunteer

After Whitworth and his experiments 1853-57 (Govt funded), Alexander Henry patented his famous pattern in 1860-61. And soon after, Kerr and other rifling patterns were being established for the 52bore. These are considered ‘deep’ rifling. Rigby, then Metford established ‘shallow’ rifling to...

    Parker Hale Whitworth vs. Volunteer

PH rights are now owned by Pedersoli. Currently Pedersoli Whitworth is 3 band ( as were PH) Pedersoli Volunteer is 2band and has conventional rifling. (PH Vol 3 band has Rigby (limited production), 2band Alexander Henry). The Whitworth will take more effort to shoot well.

Nipples: To Remove Or Not Remove

Always remove the nipple… check the threads and fit on both nipple and breech. If you have a hesitation - replace, even to a friends Whitworth. If it’s all looks good - leave it and go shoot.

    Pedersoli Rust Brown Barrel?

When I spoke to Pierangelo and his Son Stephano at the SHOT show in 2017 or 18? After they purchased PH name/rights and announced thier Whitworth with Brown barrel. They said they could no longer use the chemicals for rust blue/brown due to Govt regulations.

Nice showing of parts of history. Looks like he enjoys his Lancaster as I do mine. Not sure about priming the pan before loading though… Thanks for sharing.

    .45 Caliber: Deer?

Taken 2 does with 40cal PRB over 40gr Swiss 2f. Both double lung shots under 50yds, neither went more than 30yds. An accurate shot is most important.

If muzzleloading was a sport on ESPN (funny video)

ESPN aired a few (very few) ML shooting episodes in the mid-1990’s. I believe it was Jim Scouten, prior to his own Shooting USA.
